Netflix is making good on its promise to offer more interactive television content with the interactive teaser trailer for You vs. Wild, starring Bear Grylls. The latest addition to Netflix’s enormous library of original programming follows in the footsteps of the not-so surprisingly popular Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which took the usual gloomy, technophobic world of Charlie Brooker’s anthology series and put the direction of the feature-length episode’s storyline into the hands of those watching at home — provided they were doing so on an appropriate device, of course. The result was a seemingly successful foray into the world of interactive television for the streaming service, one that looks as though it’s only going to keep growing.

It wouldn’t have been hard to imagine Netflix deciding to stay within a genre similar to that of Black Mirror for its follow up to Bandersnatch, but it looks as though the service will be ditching dystopian sci-fi for the survivalist adventures of media personality Bear Grylls, who has been a staple of semi-reality TV since Man vs. Wild kicked off more than a decade ago. Since then, the former SAS serviceman has produced and starred in a number of similar series, like Running Wild with Bear Grylls, Bear Grylls: Mission Survive, and Worst-Case Scenario.

Now, it seems the TV adventurer is ready to have the audience decide what his next move will be in You vs. Wild, where “viewers decide what Bear Grylls eats, encounters, and experiences in a new, interactive, family-friendly adventure series.” Check out the interactive trailer for the new series as well as a brief synopsis below:

You Vs Wild Onesheet

“In You vs. Wild, viewers join survival expert Bear Grylls on exciting adventures all over the world. Dense jungles, towering mountains, brutal deserts, and mysterious forests await, with tough decisions around every corner. In this groundbreaking interactive adventure series, you make all the decisions and whether or not Bear succeeds or fails is totally up to you.”

The trailer alone is probably enough to get most people interested in checking out You vs. Wild. Even if that brand of edutainment isn’t your cup of tea, the interactive component might be enough to pique your interest. That’s especially true if you were taken in by the variety of choices presented in Bandersnatch and now find yourself drunk on such power. Sure, the actual power of the viewer is actually pretty limited, but giving those watching a chance to decide what Grylls will do next may serve to extend the life of the content, bringing viewers back again and again to test out different scenarios and potentially life-threatening situations. No word yet on whether or not you’ll be able to choose to have Grylls retire to a swanky hotel in the midst of one or more of his rugged adventures, but that would definitely make this must-see TV.
