Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was an adorable coming-of-age comedy series about its titular protagonist overcoming unthinkable trauma. Kimmy was abducted as a teenager and kept underground in a bunker in a cult-like atmosphere. She and the other women were told there was a nuclear apocalypse and they were the only survivors. Fifteen years later, Kimmy was rescued only to find out that there was no apocalypse, and that life continued on as normal. She now has to learn how to adapt to the modern-day world in New York City.

As fantastic as the show was, there were bound to be useless or seemingly unnecessary storylines throughout the show's four seasons. Keep reading to see 10 of the worst.

Why Did Artie Need To Die?

Artie Goodman and Lillian Kaushtupper embrace on the couch in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

We meet Artie Goodman in the third season after he tries to upgrade Lilian's failing neighborhood. Lilian did everything she could to hate Artie but she ended up falling for him. The two couldn't be any more different, and yet they beat the odds and made their crazy relationship work. But out of nowhere, Artie dies. Lilian knew of his health issues, but to put Lilian through such heartache (again) seemed unnecessary — especially when she was put in charge of his daughter's trust.

Her Relationship With Her Mom

When Kimmy was rescued by the bunker, she did a little press tour and then settled into life in New York City. We never once heard about her parents until later in the series when we learned her dad was a cop and her mom left Indiana (which made Kimmy think she wasn't loved).

Kimmy traveled to Disney World to see Lori-Ann for the first time in over 15 years, and the meeting was filled with denial. Lori-Ann didn't want to admit to being a bad mother, and Kimmy had to accept that her life was better off without her. It seemed justified to learn more about Kimmy's parents, but knowing her mother didn't "want" her seemed unnecessary after the ordeal she went through.

Did Andrea Need To Be An Alcoholic?

When Kimmy is ready for therapy, she starts seeing Dr. Andrea Bayden. The only problem is that Andrea is an alcoholic who seems to take advantage of Kimmy's kindness. Andrea does her best to get to the root of Kimmy's problems, but it's hard to know if she's sober or not. Sadly, Andrea would have been a great character if she wasn't yet another person in Kimmy's life who was using her for something. Can't Kimmy catch a break?

Titus' Marriage

During Kimmy's trial against Rev. Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, Titus went viral for embarrassing himself on camera (while also singing). His viral video led his estranged wife to find him. As Titus is not straight, learning he was once married to a woman was surprising, to say the least.

And while the storyline was semi-interesting, it seemed rather unnecessary. We never saw his ex again after the episode ended ,and the lawsuit against him wasn't drawn out. Titus a full character as is; we didn't need a marriage to make his story whole.

When Gretchen Joined Another Cult (And Tried Creating A New One)

Out of all the "Mole Women," Gretchen was by far the most brainwashed. In fact, she liked being brainwashed. She willingly joined the cult instead of being abducted like the other three women. Once all the women were freed, we learn that Gretchen joined yet another cult. Kimmy had to rescue Gretchen from herself, but what did she do instead? She tried creating her own cult!

Gretchen being brainwashed made for some pretty funny moments in the show, but it was upsetting that out of all the women who were rescued from the bunker, she was actually regressing, and her pain was laughed at by everyone but Kimmy.

Jacqueline Drugging Her Son

Jacqueline White is not a great mother. She was horrified of her stepdaughter, and let her nannies take care of her son. But when Jacqueline loses most of her money in the divorce, she learns that her son has no regard for authority. He doesn't listen to her and dismisses everything she says. To have him act like a relaxed member of society, she got a prescription to help with his mood swings. But the drugs ended up turning her son into an obedient zombie — he had no emotion and was totally submissive.

Fans of the show were horrified by this episode. Some thought the show was poking fun at mothers who also give their kids medication while others felt it was wrong for her to drug her son just because she didn't know how to handle him.

When Kimmy Got Divorced

Just when we thought Kimmy was clear from the Reverend, she receives a call from him in jail claiming he needs a divorce. And just like that, Kimmy is psychologically back in the bunker. Can't this woman escape this horror of a man? By the start of the third season, Kimmy proceeds with her divorce filings as it appears that the two actually did get married. But around this time, she learns the Reverend is trying to get re-married to his lawyer, which complicated some things. Kimmy being legally married seemed totally unnecessary to the plot.

Kimmy's Dad And Sister

How obnoxious was Kimmy's younger sister, and how obtuse was her dad? Randy was Kimmy's father, who was not the best cop in the world and hands down the most irritating part of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. But right alongside him was Kimmy's half-sister, Kymmi. Kymmi resented Kimmy because her dad treated her with kid gloves, and didn't trust the world after Kimmy's abduction. With Randy being an emotional mess and Kymmi being a spoiled teenager, these two shouldn't have ever been added to any storyline.

The Sexual Harassment Complaint Against Kimmy

In the Season 4 premiere, Kimmy is shocked when her co-workers at Giztoob filed a sexual harassment complaint against her. The complaint ultimately got Kimmy fired, which was upsetting because sweet, naive Kimmy didn't even know she was being inappropriate. Due to her lack of education and overall social awareness, Kimmy had no idea she was making those kinds of advances or making others feel uncomfortable. With everything Kimmy had been through, it would have been nice to see her win one for once. Why couldn't she have another issue at work to tackle?

Kimmy Getting Into Columbia

Kimmy attending a local community college seemed more on par with her lifestyle, but in the fourth season, we saw her attend the prestigious Columbia University. Kimmy deserves the world and the finest education out there...but Columbia? And to make things even more far-fetched, she was given a full scholarship for joining the rowing team. Unfortunately, this storyline just didn't seem realistic for Kimmy, and fans of the show saw it as outlandish.
