Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 4 is almost here, but it'll be the series' last hurrah. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, doesn't have the most normal premise for a sitcom. The series follows the twenty-something title character (played by Ellie Kemper) as she's rescued from the underground bunker of a doomsday cult. Since childhood, Kimmy has been locked away. Upon being released from her personal prison, Kimmy hilariously tackles the world with a wide-eyed enthusiasm.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has never attained quite the level of cultural cache as some of Netflix's other originals. The sitcom has never been as big a pop culture phenomenon as shows like Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, or even Black Mirror. However, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has a dedicated following and a quite consistent level of quality, especially when it comes to performances. Ellie Kemper and Tituss Burgess - who plays Kimmy's roommate, Titus Andromedon - have even received several acting accolades for their work. Nevertheless, Kimmy's upcoming season 4 will mark the end of its run, although there is a bit of a twist in store for fans.

Deadline was the first to report Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's demise. The plan wasn't always for season 4 to be the final season, but everyone involved reportedly felt it was the right time to end the series. However, there is a chance that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt won't end with just season 4. Discussions are underway for the series to receive a wrap-up TV movie. This movie would serve as the series finale. It's a similar idea to what Netflix is already doing with their cancelled cult sci-fi series Sense8. Although in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's case, everyone seems to be on board with the wrap-up from the start.

Despite today's news, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fans might have a long while to wait until they see the comedy come to a close. Before the decision was made to end the series with season 4, Netflix announced that it would break up the season into two parts. The first half of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (which will consist of six episodes) is hitting Netflix at the end of May. There's no date yet announced for the release of the other half.

If the plans for a TV movie series finale move through, it's possible that the wait for the second half of the season will end up being even longer. Netflix might want to deliver the final chapter of Kimmy Schmidt all in one go, with the second half of season 4 and the series finale. On the other hand, delaying the arrival of the second half until a wrap-up movie could be completed would be a shrewd way for Netflix to keep Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in the public eye for a bit longer.
