After months and months of great content from Netflix, it’s time to finally buckle down and get on with our lives. Gone are the days of Stranger Things and Black Mirror, and here to stay are cozy November days filled with reading a novel in front of a fireplace. Bundle up in your best jacket and enjoy what’s left of Autumn, because - actually, scratch that, we just checked what’s coming to Netflix this November and it turns out that there’s more great original series and movies than ever before. So, yeah, we’re all screwed.

As the calendar turns we find ourselves with another month of content from Netflix, and nearly everything this month looks incredibly worthwhile. From absurdly expensive period dramas to captivating documentaries to new under-the-radar original series that you can brag about being the first to discover, Netflix has you covered this November, and so do we. Buckle down and get your remote ready, because here’s our list of the 15 Things You Need To Watch On Netflix This November.

15. The Crown (Season 1) – November 4

Netflix The Crown Claire Foy

The main thing to know about The Crown, Netflix’s newest attempt at holding us hostage in front of our television screens, is how much it cost to make the first ten episode season. That number comes in at about 100 million British Pounds, or roughly 120 million dollars. What that amounts to is the cold hard truth that no matter if The Crown is your cup of tea or not, you still have to watch it, because all of your Netflix subscription money has gone directly into the making of this epic series.

Set to take place over six seasons, The Crown is the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign over the span of the past six decades. A tale of post-war Britain as well as power, scandal, heartbreak, intrigue, and fancy British costumes, the series is written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry. Bound to be filled with breathtaking cinematography and a story that will make you want to binge it all immediately despite having no previous interest in the monarchy of Britain, The Crown is set to be everyone’s newest obsession. Here’s hoping its reign keeps us intrigued well into the future.

14. Ravenous (1999) – November 1

Robert Carlyle in Ravenous

If you’re still hungover from Halloween on November 1st and don’t feel like it should be over yet, put on Ravenous and all your Halloween desires will be granted – or purged from your system. Starring Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle, this dementedly twisted film is one that seems to have gotten lost over time, but that doesn’t make it any more amazing.

Set in the 19th century and featuring cannibalism, war, and an absolutely killer score by Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn, Ravenous makes less sense the more you think about it, but that’s part of what makes it so great. Truly one of those missed gems that Netflix is so great at presenting to you and making you take notice of, this is definitely a film worth indulging in at least once in your life; whether you’re ready for Halloween and all its weird spookiness to be over or not.

13. Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60 (2016) – November 4

Dana Carvey speaking on a mic in a still from Straight Male Ego

Netflix has been bringing us great comedy specials for a while now, and in many ways a Netflix Original comedy special showing up on your Netflix account is as good a stamp of approval as any. Since it can be argued that Netflix knows your taste in comedy better than yourself – what with its algorithms continually algorithming – if Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60 appears on your Netflix home page you better push play immediately.

Aside from that recommendation, all we can say is that Dana Carvey has been a stalwart of stand-up comedy for a very long time, and it’s tough to go wrong with someone as polished and straight up hilarious as he is. While his new special looks primed to tackle current events and his place in a dramatically shifting comedy landscape, you’re still safe to expect silly faces, great impressions, and a ton of energy for someone who is admittedly just a 60 year old straight white male.

12. The Ivory Game (2016) – November 4

the-ivory-game-image-1

On our monthly post of What’s New On Netflix, we have been big proponents of all the documentaries that they have to offer. When a service gives us nearly endless prestige TV series and indie movies, it’s tough to get lost in the woods, and that’s where a great documentary like The Ivory Game comes in. With something as educational as this it’s easy to feel like our life is back on track at least for a short moment and that we’re doing something somewhat important with our time.

Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and coming on the heels of Virunga – Netflix’s last Oscar nominated Feature Documentary – The Ivory Game takes a look at Chinese and African elephant poaching and the demand for ivory. Sickeningly brutal and exceptionally eye-opening, the documentary takes a first-hand look at 21st century consumption and the environmental effects of a handful of people’s tragic actions.

11. Just Friends (2005) – November 4

Ryan Reynolds as Chris and Amy Stuart as Jamie in Just Friends

Ryan Reynolds is charming as overweight (and then no longer overweight) Ryan Reynolds in this movie that makes us wonder, "what ever happened to Amy Smart?" As a romantic comedy from the era when romantic comedies could just be – without any ironic reasoning or meta twisting of rom-com tropes – Just Friends is nothing but an enjoyable movie, and that’s all it needs to be.

The great thing about Netflix – as well as the worst thing about it – is that it provides us with so many choices that it’s nearly crippling. And when that crippling choice paralysis sets in, sometimes we just want to revert back to simpler times and rewatch what we know. In that case, Just Friends is the perfect choice for a miserable November day in front of the TV. It’s charming, funny, sweet, emotionally pure, and surprisingly well-acted. It’s a throwback to times when movies didn’t need to be complicated, and as a result it’s everything that we could ever ask for in today’s age of deep indie dramas and Ryan Reynolds as an R-rated, box-office crushing mutant X-men referencing mutant superhero.

10. Tales by Light (Season 1) – November 11

Tales By Light

Tales by Light is a recent entry into the genre that we like to call “4K drama.” Purely exhilarating and awe-inspiring in so many ways, the series isn’t something that catches you with twists and turns a la House of Cards or knocks you flat out with hilarity like Orange is the New Black, but instead it just… exists, in the best way, and in a gorgeously 4K way that shows off your television in ways you’d never imagined.

In fact, Netflix’s new original series isn’t even a scripted drama, but it’s so shockingly beautiful and captivating that you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was. The story of the photographers who capture those gorgeous nature documentaries that we have spent so many of our nights watching, Tales by Light gives us a unique look behind the camera at who makes the objects in front of the camera look so spectacular.

9. True Memoirs of an International Assassin (2016) – November 11

the-true-memoirs-of-an-international-assassin

If this sounds like another documentary, don’t worry! There’s only so much educational content someone can watch in a month! So if you’re wondering what exactly the True Memoirs of an International Assassin would consist of, then you’ll be surprised to learn that it consists of Kevin James and Andy Garcia running around in what we can only imagine will be classified as a “comedy!”

The official Netflix description describes the film as being about a publisher changing a writer’s debut novel about a deadly assassin from fiction to non-fiction, so of course that means we’ll find ourselves watching Kevin James narrowly avoid death in a number of amusing scenarios. It may sound like we're mocking this movie, but True Memoirs of an International Assassin is very much a movie that we’re excited to watch, as whether it’s surprisingly good or unsurprisingly cringeworthy, a Kevin James movie that we can watch for free on Netflix is nothing but the best early Christmas gift we can ask for. How many times will he get kicked in the balls? We can all find out – for free! – on November 11!

8. Jackass 3.5: The Unrated Movie (2011) – November 16

Johnny Knoxville jumps a jetski in Jackass 3.5

If you saw Jackass 3 then you can only imagine what type of outrageous stunts would be cut from the movie in favour of an unrated edition in Jackass 3.5: The Unrated Movie. If you didn’t see Jackass 3 and have no interest in the Jackass franchise as a whole, then you should still probably check this film out, because it’s nothing short of a religious experience.

Okay, so maybe it is a little short of a religious experience, but sometimes life requires nothing more than people that are asking to get badly injured getting badly injured. It may be everything wrong with modern society for some people, while for others its showmanship on a grand scale. The one thing you can’t deny is how fun it is. Filled with absurd stunts and some genuinely laugh out loud moments, Jackass 3.5: The Unrated Movie is something that you’d enjoy even if you’re certain you won’t enjoy it.

7. Paddington (2014) – November 16

Paddington 2 may arrive in 2017

Coming at your with some family friendly fun in the place of Jackass 3.5, Paddington is the perfect treat to get you amped up for family-friendly Christmas movie season. And since it’s November 16th and therefore time to start listening to Christmas music, putting up lights, and watching films that have snow in them in any capacity, Paddington will be sure to fill your heart with childlike joy, whether you know the origin of the UK’s favo(u)rite bear or not.

Though Paddington initially was dismissed during production as being a little too silly and slapstick to end up becoming anything less than another Chipmunks film, everything ended up coming together nicely in the end. Featuring a heart-warming story, some beautiful CG, and a bear that you can’t help but think is adorable, the film avoids the trappings that many others have fallen into and navigates the way to Christmas movie classic with more than enough humor and marmalade to fill a sequel.

6. Paranoid (Season 1) – November 17

Paranoid

Is there anything better than a UK crime drama? Does anything bind us North Americans together more than a gritty series about a small English town where an unspeakable tragedy has happened? Is there anything as bingable as a series where British accents mix with cinematography of the English countryside that then blend with blood and criminal activity? Well, with Paranoid, we’re about to find out.

Following along the lines of our greatest Netflix obsessions in Broadchurch, Happy Valley, The Fall, and Luther, Paranoid is set against the backdrop of a brutal crime and the ensuing search to discover the truth about what happened. As dark and British as you could ever hope for, this British production brought to you by Netflix focuses on our heroes’ personal demons as much as the demons committing the mysterious crimes at the center of the series. And whether it’s actually quality television or not, we’ll still be transfixed by Paranoid strictly because British TV has a way of hooking you and making you think you’re worldly just for watching.

5. Mercy (2016) – November 22

Netflix Mercy 2016

The latest Netflix original film is actually set to be introduced to theatres before its availability on the streaming service, but come November 22nd you’ll have all the free access to this buzzy but not exactly awards-season film that you want. Written and directed by Buried writer Chris Sparling, the film is billed as a home invasion thriller, but based on Netflix’s synopsis and early word it seems that there’s more than meets the eye with Mercy.

As two brothers clash with their half-siblings upon return to their childhood home, a visit to see their dying mother uncovers old secrets before taking a turn for the worst. With James Wolk and Masters of Sex’s Caitlin FitzGerald staring, we couldn’t be more excited to see a film made by a great writer and filled with performances from consistently under the radar – yet exceptional – actors. Whether it’s the surprise hit of the month or just another home invasion movie, we’re going to be watching this one with high hopes.

4. 3% (Season 1) – November 25

3 percent netflix

When Netflix funds an eight episode first season of a Brazilian sci-fi series that is 100% subtitled, well, we’d like to say people take notice but that sadly isn’t the case. Despite trailers and descriptions available on Netflix itself, there’s been very little heard around the world about the excitingly epic drama, 3%, that Netflix is hoping to make an international splash with.

But that’s why we’re here to tell you that this is a series worth checking out. Directed by Oscar nominee Cesar Charlone, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a group of unconnected people who are trying to be chosen to be sent to a better place. Following a series of harrowing tests and experiments and fights and drama, only 3% succeed being sent to this new world of progress, and the rest are left for devastation in their old world. It’s the exact type of series that Netflix dreams are made of, and subtitled or not this looks to be as bingeworthy as any other Netflix original in recent memory.

3. Boyhood (2014) – November 25

Child Mason lying on the grass looking at the sky in Boyhood

There are two types of people in the world: those who have not seen Boyhood, and those who haven’t seen Boyhood enough. Now you may be saying “I saw Boyhood four times!” But listen, that’s not enough. No matter how many times you have or haven’t seen Richard Linklater’s astounding masterpiece, you haven’t seen it enough.

Surely you know the story by now; filmed over twelve years and following the unremarkable yet life-changing journey of a child and his family, Boyhood is the Best Picture of this century, despite going home from the 2014 Oscars without a Best Picture trophy. The film is absolutely timeless – which may be an odd thing to say about a movie that’s only two years old – but what can you remember about many other films released in 2014? Perfect and heartwarming, Boyhood is a film so good that it makes you not want to watch any other films, and its arrival on Netflix is bad news for anything else that’s even remotely near it in the streaming giant’s signature rows of streamable movies.

2. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016) – November 25

Gilmore Girls Netflix Fall Trailer

Netflix is back at the revival game and this time it’s doing something a little less cheesy than Fuller House, but still with its own legion of hardcore fans. Ditching the laugh-track and cringey dialogue for warm mugs of coffee and the fastest dialogue this side of The West Wing, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is everything we would have never been so greedy as to ask for; but here it is anyway.

With four “movies,” each chronicling a new season in the life of the titular Gilmore Girls, A Year in the Life looks to be a very unique way to satisfy a fanbase while still bringing something to the table for newcomers. And that’s who should be watching this Netflix revival; newcomers, diehard fans, everyone. Don’t let the title throw you off if you’re a guy who won’t watch something with the word “Girls” in there. Gilmore Girls is a smart, funny, rapid-fire show that has all the heart and humor and drama that you need to remain an emotionally healthy human person. And let’s say you’re not currently an emotionally healthy human person; well, throw on Girlmore Girls: A Year in the Life and you will be by winter (both the episode and the season).

1. The Jungle Book (2016) – November 30

Neel Sethi in The Jungle Book

What’s a new release like this doing so deep in the jungle of Netflix originals? Shouldn’t The Jungle Book be somewhere else, like on some fancy on demand service or living it up on the the pages of iTunes? Well, we don’t know, but we’re not one to turn down an amazing gift, so just in time for the holidays here’s this summer’s massive hit on Netflix for free!

Shockingly well-received when it came out earlier this year, The Jungle Book took the whole idea of Disney live-action reboots and finally gave them a gold standard to look up to. Packed with breathtaking computer animation, a story as family-friendly and heart-warming as the original cartoon, and enough songs to feel like a perfect Disney movie without being a musical, The Jungle Book is everything you could ever want it to be. Be sure to watch the film if you haven’t seen it, and if you have seen it be sure to watch again, as ten years from now when every single Disney film will have been adapted into a glossy CG fairytale, you’re going to need to explain how it happened; and it happened right here with this film and you playing on repeat on Netflix.
