A new Netflix Original movie is developing, inspired by the wholesome viral story of a grandma who accidentally invited a stranger to Thanksgiving dinner. Back in 2016, Arizona native Wanda Dench sent a text to 17-year-old Jamal Hinton, inviting him to Thanksgiving, thinking it was her grandson's number. Hinton ended up attending Dench's holiday dinner and has continued to celebrate with her every year since.

In recent years, Hinton's own family has been welcomed to the regular Thanksgiving meal. And in November 2020, the group continued the celebration after Dench's husband of more than 40 years died from complications due to the COVID-19 virus. Every Thanksgiving, Hinton and Dench are sure to provide the thousands of people who have followed the story since 2016 with a photo and update from their now-yearly gathering.

Variety reports that Netflix is releasing a film inspired by the heartwarming viral story, called The Thanksgiving Text. The movie will be written by Abdul Williams. Hinton and Dench will also be working on the development of The Thanksgiving Text, which Hinton recently announced on Twitter. Check out his tweet below:

While festive family films or horror classics are common for Christmas and Halloween, Thanksgiving films have previously been a little more subtle in their methods of featuring the November celebration. Needless to say, there aren't too many Thanksgiving films that are universal classics. Thanksgiving films might be tougher to classify, but sometimes it's more about the act of watching a festive film than the subject matter itself. It's sometimes the best time to officially start watching Christmas flicks. Or it can just be about the tradition and a nice way to spend time with family after indulging in a hearty meal. Some Thanksgiving films would include Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Rocky, and Lady Bird. But now, Netflix is taking an unconventional approach to making a festive film by basing it on an innocent social media post that captured the hearts of many.

It's not often that a funny tweet about a wrong number mishap ends up landing a Netflix movie deal. But the story behind The Thanksgiving Text is very pure and will likely be a touching story for families to watch together. Netflix isn't new to finding unusual inspiration and transforming it into content based on real-life — think of the phenomenon of Tiger KingThe Thanksgiving Text also gives Netflix a chance to share a real-life feel-good story with its subscribers that's sure to attract a wide variety of viewers.
