Fans are excited about the possibility of a third season for Netflix's Sex Education. The series follows Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), the son of a sex therapist (Gillian Anderson) who partners with a girl from his school, Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) to run a sex advice clinic. The show's first two seasons were met with high praise.
Audiences seem to really appreciate the romance of Sex Education. The "will they/won't they" story involving Otis and Maeve is one of the best in all of television. There are also plenty of relationships that support the LGBTQ community. The following huge romantic gestures showcase exactly why people love the show so much.
Rahim Kisses Eric In Public
At first glance, this may not seem like a grand gesture. If you're dating someone and you kiss them in public, it sounds like a typical act. However, this meant a lot to Eric. For most of the season, he is torn between his feelings for Rahim and the ones he has for Adam.
Adam is still ashamed of being bisexual, so he only spends time with Eric in private. When Eric ultimately chooses to date Rahim, he responds by planting a kiss on him in public. Eric is taken aback because he's never experienced this before. It was a sweet moment made grander by what it meant to Eric.
Otis' Speech
During the season one finale, the whole school gets together for a dance. One student threatens to hurt himself if the girl he's interested in doesn't positively respond to his advances. Nobody manages to talk him down until Otis speaks up in front of everyone.
Otis delivers a rousing speech that convinces him to come down but also addresses his situation with Maeve. He talks about having feelings for someone who doesn't reciprocate. While he does this, Maeve watches him intently. Her date Jackson notices that she shares Otis' feelings, even if Otis doesn't realize.
Maeve's Birthday Gift
Otis and Maeve are the show's focal budding romance, though they don't spend as much time together in these episodes as they did in season one. However, one of their best moments came on Maeve's birthday. Otis wishes her a happy one when he finds out, only for her to point out that she's not a fan of birthdays.
Later in the episode, Otis brings her a present. It's a five-year diary but her birthday pages are all ripped out so she doesn't have to celebrate. It's the perfect unexpected gift. The whole thing is so sweet that Maeve nearly lets her feelings for Otis known afterward.
Ola Runs To Lily
The relationship between Ola and Otis turns out to be mostly rocky during the second season. At one point, Ola begins having sexual dreams about her friend Lily. It confused her at first because she's never had an attraction towards another girl. Some research leads Ola to discover that she is pansexual.
Pansexuals are attracted to a person's personality regardless of their gender. After breaking up with Otis, Ola runs straight to Lily's house just like she did in her dream. As soon as Lily opens the door, Ola plants a big kiss on her. Things are awkward between them after but they eventually start dating.
The Sweater
Otis' sweater has a recurring role in season one. He first gives it to Maeve during a walk in the cold. It's an intimate moment that nearly leads to their first kiss. Later, we see Maeve mostly ignore her brother and Jackson at home before she takes a moment to stop and sniff Otis' sweater before smiling.
That sweater proves to be a problem as Jackson finds that Maeve sleeps with it. She's comforted by Otis. Maeve also grabs it after Otis sends her the award she rightfully won and runs off to tell him how she feels. Unfortunately, she spots him kissing Ola. However, everything about this sweater is a sweet gesture.
Jackson's Song
While not many Sex Education fans were supporters of Jackson and Maeve's relationship, there's no denying that this was a huge gesture. Jackson likes Maeve and goes to Otis for advice on how to woo her. Otis purposely tells him to do something big and cheesy like in the movies because he knows Maeve hates that stuff.
Jackson listens and gets some of his fellow classmates to help him put on a show. He sings to Maeve and asks her to be his girlfriend in front of the whole school. Surprisingly, Maeve is into this and accepts his offer. The two date for pretty much the rest of the season.
"I Want To Hold Your Hand"
As discussed earlier, Adam has strong feelings for Eric but struggles with his sexuality. He doesn't want people to know that he's attracted to the same sex and that causes him to hide who he truly is. During the season two finale, a talk from his mother and the realization that Ola is his first true friend prompts him to do something drastic.
Adam sprints to the school and rushes onto the stage during the big play. He openly admits that he wants to hold Eric's hand in front of everyone. It's a huge deal since that's the small thing Eric mentioned Adam wouldn't do in front of others. They do so and it makes for a wonderful romantic moment.
Otis Waits For Maeve
Sex Education deals with the controversial topic of abortion. Maeve gets pregnant by Jackson and decides she doesn't want the baby. Needing someone to help her get home after the procedure, Maeve selects Otis but doesn't tell him what it's for. He shows up thinking it's a date and she ultimately lashes out at him.
Maeve tells Otis to just leave and though he exits the clinic, he doesn't go home. He gets her flowers and waits for her. Maeve's reaction to seeing that he cared enough to wait is sweet. It is probably the first time that she felt something romantic for Otis.
Maeve Opens Up
Season one wraps up with Meave trying to tell Otis how she felt, only to find him with Ola. The first half of season two deals with her struggles to discuss those feelings. During the fourth episode, as Otis is on his way to have sex for the first time, Maeve opens up.
She spills her heart as she admits that she was confused and that she likes Otis. Unfortunately, Otis gets angry because she brings this up at the worst possible time. He admits how he tore himself inside out over her. Though the reaction from both leads to sadness, it was a huge deal for Maeve to do this.
The Voicemail
After an emotional outburst that hurts Maeve, Otis has soul searching to do. A conversation with his dad leads him to realize what matters in his life. He spots Maeve on television during her academic competition and calls her. Though he knows she can't answer the phone, he leaves her a voicemail.
We don't hear the contents until the final moments of season two. It is Otis saying that he's proud of Maeve and that he loves her. He says that he's always loved her. It's genuinely romantic but also depressing since Isaac, who has a crush on Maeve, deletes it before she gets to hear it.
