Unlike the new Netflix series, this 1997 movie only offered a brief glimpse of Quintanilla’s childhood. Instead, it showcased the singer’s music career as she went on tours and performed onstage. The movie earned Lopez a Golden Globe nomination and it also launched the actress/singer into superstardom, as she became the first Latina to earn $1 million for a role.

The entire time, the significance of the movie was not lost on Lopez. “And it was like, ‘She’s worth this,’” Lopez told Variety. “It was a statement to the world.”
