Netflix's gory but lighthearted zombie comedy Santa Clarita Diet has added former Community star Joel McHale to its season 2 cast. While not quite an A-list Netflix original on the level of hits like Stranger Things and Daredevil, one lower-key success story for the streaming giant last year was the debut of Santa Clarita Diet. The series' initial marketing campaign was pretty inventive, with little being initially known about Santa Clarita Diet, before the big reveal that married realtor Sheila (Drew Barrymore) had died, and now lived on a diet of human flesh.

While the zombie sub-genre has arguably been done to death in the current decade - the pop culture omnipresence of AMC's The Walking Dead franchise having a considerable amount to do with that - Santa Clarita Diet's comedic approach to undead life brought a fresh spin to the usual zombie story, earning positive marks from critics and quickly amassing a loyal fanbase. Said fanbase was quite happy when Netflix opted to renew Santa Clarita Diet for a second season not long after its debut on the service.

One of the most endearing aspects of Santa Clarita Diet for many was the relationship between Sheila and husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant). Joel made a decision pretty early on that he was sticking by his wife for the long haul, no matter what ghastly deed that her further survival required. In many ways, her transformation even spiced up their marriage, giving Sheila an insatiable sex drive and boundless confidence. As TV Line reports though, Sheila and Joel are about to meet their match in the form of season 2 guest stars Chris (Joel McHale) and Christa (Maggie Lawson), a more successful pair of married real estate professionals.

McHale of course spent 6 seasons - but sadly not a movie - playing lead Jeff Winger on the cult sitcom Community. He'll soon debut a new self-titled talk show on Netflix, making this casting a likely instance of corporate synergy. Lawson is best known for her time playing Juliet on USA's Psych, but has also made a few appearances on Netflix sitcom The Ranch. This will be a reunion of sorts for her and McHale, as Lawson recurred on his short-lived CBS sitcom The Great Indoors last season.

McHale and Lawson aren't the only guest performers signed on for Santa Clarita Diet season 2 though. Joining them is TV mainstay Gerald McRaney, who starred in series such as Major Dad and Jericho, and guest starred on programs like House of Cards and This Is Us. McRaney will play Ed Thune, "a retired Army colonel who’s intimidated by Joel."

Additionally, Happy Endings vet Zachary Knighton will visit Santa Clarita Diet as Paul, "the chill descendant of Serbian ancestors who has been tasked with pursuing the truth of the undead, no matter who or what stands in his way." Hopefully this particular Serbian is in possession of useful info that might help Joel and Sheila's cause. As fans will recall, the season 1 finale left them in quite the perilous predicament.
