The official trailer for Ratched shows Sarah Paulson giving a dose of bone-chilling medicine as the villainous Nurse in Ryan Murphy’s series. Murphy continues to prove his worth to Netflix after leaving 20th Century Fox to partner with the streaming giant. Starring Paulson as Nurse Ratched, Murphy’s take on the iconic nurse has been in development since 2017. Penned by Evan Romansky, Ratched is the latest collaboration between Murphy and Paulson, as Paulson has appeared in numerous Murphy-helmed projects, including American Horror Story and American Crime Story.

Recently, Netflix revealed that Ratched is slated to premiere on September 18. Centering on the origin story of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ratched dives into Nurse Mildred Ratched’s (Paulson) journey from asylum nurse to a murderous monster. Set against the backdrop of Northern California in 1947, Ratched takes place 15 years before the events of the classic film. Now, Netflix has revealed the full trailer to offer a gander at Paulson as the diabolical nurse.

Set against the backdrop of the hauntingly cheerful song "Big Spender," (from the musical Sweet Charity) Netflix’s trailer for Ratched reveals Paulson as a stylish younger version of Mildred Ratched. Previously portrayed by Louise Fletcher in the 1975 film, Nurse Ratched appears to have a sinister side slowly emerging. Per Netflix’s logline of the series, Ratched will show Mildred presenting herself as the ideal image of what a medical professional should be. Arriving in California for employment at a psychiatric hospital, Nurse Ratched ascertains unsettling experiments are being performed on the human mind. Infused with disturbing moments, ominous cinematography, and Nurse Ratched hauntingly stating to a fellow nurse who stole her peach, “Just thinking of all the things I’m doing to do about it.” the trailer for Ratched is one wild ride. Toting an ensemble of high caliber talent, Ratched also stars Sharon Stone, Cynthia Nixon, Charlie Carver, Finn Wittrock, Amanda Plummer, Hunter Parrish, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Chronicling the evolution of the timid nurse to titular villain, Ratched season 1 will consist of eight episodes. Netflix appears adamant about padding its catalog with original content for the fall season. The streaming service will release The Trial of the Chicago 7, an adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca, and horror movie Cadaver shortly after Ratched hits the platform.

Following her exit from AHS, Paulson tackled roles in Mrs. America, and as Linda Tripp in the upcoming season of American Crime Story. However, Paulson, as Nurse Ratched, has been one of the most anticipated works of her career. Given Paulson’s ability to inhabit her roles and the surroundings of her character, she is the best choice to take on the insanity, hostility, and complexity of Nurse Ratched. Helmed by Murphy, powered by Paulson, and steered by a talented supporting cast, Ratched could undoubtedly be a hit for Netflix.
