Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean meets Gossip Girl in the new binge-worthy Netflix Original, Outer Banks. In this intoxicating drama, Kooks versus Pogues rule the island off of North Carolina and those who are smart would never mess with a Kook and their status.

That is, until John B. enters the screen. Once he does, what becomes an innocent teen drama turns into a story filled with treasure hunting, murder, and betrayal. Along the way characters get in the way, along with their mistakes, and lack of intelligence. With that being said, here are the main characters of Outer Banks, ranked by their intelligence.

Rafe Cameron

Just like his father, Rafe is ruled by his greed. His selfishness gets in the way of his decision-making (i.e. the motorcycle, the drugs, the gun, etc.) He damages his own life so much, he ends up being “owned” by a drug dealer. His drastic choices, as well as the way he spoke to others, led him down an unintelligent road, one we all hated watching.

Topper

As much potential Topper had, it all went kaput soon after the first episode and it kept dropping as the season progressed. He’s what people call a toxic boyfriend, and then a cringe-worthy ex-boyfriend. Essentially, all he cared about was Sarah, and even when he had her, he messed it up. He always seemed to mean well, but with the influence of his friends, he let them get into his head. However, the one redeeming moment was covering for John B. while the cops pursued him. Other than that, it always seemed Topper got in his own way.

Ward Cameron

Unsurprisingly, Ward comes in at the bottom of the list. He has a one-track mind - he takes what he gets and he will stop at nothing to get it. He values greed over morals and that alone makes him unintelligent.

In addition, it took him a couple of episodes to realize John B. was on his trail, and it took him an episode or two to figure out that the gold was in the house that was for sale. He’s blinded by his goals and that’s what makes him bottom tier.

JJ

While JJ is no John B. or Sheriff Peterkin, he is loyal to a fault, but that can bring him in messy situations. Because of his abusive father, he does his best to not end up like his old man, but sometimes the hot and cold of his father makes him do rash things, like stealing a drug dealer's money and spending it on a hot tub. Although his choices may not be intelligent at times, JJ means well and will do anything for his friends, even his father.

Kiara

Just like Sarah, Kiara is intelligent by recognizing the world she lives in is a hollow, fake one. She’s friends with Pogues since they are more down-to-earth, humble, and good people. She realizes that money isn’t everything, and if a person does value it that much, they will let it ruin their lives. She also values seeing the world, experiencing things rather than falling in love with another Islander and that also adds to her maturity and intelligence of how she sees life.

Pope

Next up is Pope, the Albert Einstein of John B.’s friend group. He’s wicked smart - all throughout the show he was talking about a scholarship and his goals to leave the island and work with cadavers. While his smarts get him to the scholarship interview, his not-so-intelligent moment was risking it all and ditching the interview to help out John B.

While him running out of the interview wasn't his shining moment, his devotion to his friends make up for it.

Sarah Cameron

Like John B., Sarah has a big heart, and it helps her see what others can’t. She sees right through Topper, her brother Rafe, and even her father, Ward. She sees her family, and her path of life, for what it truly is, and that makes her mature and intelligent than most of the characters on the show.

Sheriff Peterkin

Second to John B. is Sheriff Peterkin. While faced with evidence and alibis and lies about the treasure hunt that’s been given to her throughout the show, she’s smart enough to know that John B. isn’t the one at fault for the murder. She figures out who it actually is and arrests the person responsible. That is until they get away.

John B. Rutledge

It’s safe to say John B. is the most intelligent out of all the main characters in the show. Although his father started the treasure hunt, John B. finished it. He’s smart enough to know he can’t finish his father’s mission alone, so he also relies on his friends' help: Pope, JJ, and Kiara. John B. is a person we all strive to be: full of goodness and the responsibility to do the right thing.
