Netflix Announces Three New Sci-Fi Drama TV Shows

Netlflix October Faction

Netflix’s fondness for genre TV shows no signs of slowing down as the company orders three new series, October Faction, The I-Land, and Warrior Nun as additions to its ever-growing library of original content. The streaming giant has offered a huge amount of television over the past few years, with 2018 delivering some of the most interesting (if not the best) in recent memory. This past month has seen the likes of Maniac, American Vandal season 2, The Good Cop, BoJack Horseman season 5, and, though it’s best to forget it, Iron Fist season 2. And that list just scratches the surface of what the service actually put out in September, let alone what it still has on tap for the rest of the year.

As it turns out, the content tap will stay on full blast for the foreseeable future, as Netflix plans to bring three new high-concept series to subscribers. One of the new shows, I-Land comes from showrunner Neil LaBute (The Company of Men, Van Helsing) and stars Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns) and Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike). The series sounds like a mix between Lost and Survivor, and given the talent involved could be a hit for Netflix.

The service made the announcement today as part of a Friday news drop. That the company would choose to focus on all three at once, rather than dole out press releases separately, could be considered a sign of the company’s commitment to genre television, as there is a certain appeal in being seen to triple down on the kind of entertainment audiences can’t seem to get enough of right now. Check out a brief synopsis of each new series below:

"OCTOBER FACTION

Building on the success of the IDW comic book series written by Steve Niles, October Faction follows globetrotting monster hunters Fred and Deloris Allen who, after the death of Fred’s father, return to their hometown in upstate New York with their teenage children Geoff and Viv. As the family adjusts, Fred and Deloris must hide their identities as members of a secret organization, and our heroes quickly discover that their new small-town setting isn’t as idyllic as it seems.

The I-Land

The I-Land is a new sci-fi action adventure series. When ten people wake up on a treacherous island with no memory of who they are or how they got there, they set off on a trek to try to get back home. They soon discover this world is not as it seems. Faced with the island’s extreme psychological and physical challenges, they must rise to their better selves -- or die as their worst ones.

WARRIOR NUN

Inspired by the Manga novels, Warrior Nun revolves around a 19 year-old woman who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. She discovers she is now part of an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her."

Of course, Netflix doesn’t want comic fans to be left out either. The addition of October Faction and Warrior Nun furthers the company’s efforts to appease fans of funny books, this time by branching out with concepts from publishers other than Marvel. How any of these series will turn out is anyone’s guess, but this announcement will no doubt be taken as good news for fans of genre television.

No premiere dates have been set for October Faction, I-Land, or Warrior Nun.
