This week, Netflix continues preparing its users for the Christmas season, balancing it with the help of a mystery film and the third season of a British drama. The streaming wars are heating up now that the (supposed) biggest threat in the world of streaming has officially launched: Disney+. Although the Mouse House is bringing a lot of content, mostly appealing to nostalgia, Netflix continues with its “weekly content” formula with both licensed and original content.
Last week didn’t bring much when it comes to licensed content, but it saw the arrival of season 2 of The End of the F***ing World, the fourth season of She-Ra And The Princesses of Power, and kickstarted the holiday spirit with Let It Snow. On the licensed content front, Netflix has some interesting titles to offer this week with Tom Ford’s A Single Man, the period drama Suffragette, and Eli Roth’s cannibal horror film The Green Inferno.
As for original content, users will get the chance to watch a mystery film starring Alicia Vikander, the third season (with a new cast) of a successful British drama, and an animated Christmas movie that will surely cheer you up. Earthquake Bird
Directed by Wash Westmoreland, Earthquake Bird is based on the novel of the same name by Susanna Jones. The story is set in Tokyo, 1989, and follows an ex-pat named Lucy Fly (Alicia Vikander) who is suspected of murder when her friend Lily (Riley Keough) goes missing. The reason why Lucy is a suspect (and tormented by Lily’s disappearance) is because Lily came between her and her photographer boyfriend, Teiji (Naoki Kobayashi). Earthquake Bird had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October and is now ready to hit the streaming world.
Klaus
Billed as Netflix’s first animated feature, Klaus is an English-language Spanish animated Christmas comedy written and directed by Sergio Pablos. Klaus is a new origin story for Santa Claus, and follows Jesper (voiced by Jason Schwartzman), a postman stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle. His career as postman isn’t going well, and as he’s about to give up, he teams up with a mysterious carpenter and toymaker named Klaus (J.K. Simmons) to deliver his toys – but not everyone in town is open to happiness and joy.
The Crown - Season 3
Queen Elizabeth II’s story continues in season 3 of The Crown. This time, the series will cover the time period between 1964 and 1977, starting with Harold Wilson’s election as Prime Minister and culminating with the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The Crown will go through a change of cast with Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth and will introduce Camilla Shand (Emerald Fennell) and Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin), who will have more prominent roles in the fourth season.
