This weekend, Netflix will welcome an adult animated movie, a documentary series about a crime, the first part of a horror movie trilogy, and a series of animated music videos. The entertainment industry is starting to go back to normal after the coronavirus pandemic forced cinemas around the world to close temporarily, which in turn forced studios to either delay their releases or send them to different streaming services. As such, these platforms became the main source of entertainment for many, and in Netflix's case, its subscribers have nothing to worry about as the streaming giant will continue to house some of those movies and add a lot more of its original content.

Last weekend saw the addition of the Nigerian comedies Osuofia in London and Osuofia in London 2, multiple seasons of the reality game show The Mole, and The Seventh Day, along with the documentary series This Is Pop, the rom-com Good on Paper, the documentary Murder by the Coast, and the action thriller The Ice Road. The last days of June brought the movies Killing Them Softly and Deranged, and as it does on the first days of each month, Netflix will add a bunch of licensed content, most notably the Austin Powers trilogy, Boogie Nights, Charlie’s Angels, The Karate Kid (along with Part II and Part III), Love Actually, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Snowpiercer, Grey’s Anatomy season 17, and all seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal.

As for original content, Netflix subscribers will get to enjoy an animated movie about America’s history, a documentary series about a murder, part one of a horror trilogy based on a book series, and a series of animated videos featuring some very popular musicians. Here are the best movies and TV shows coming to Netflix this weekend - July 2.

America: The Motion Picture

AMERICA: THE MOTION PICTURE

Netflix's America: The Motion Picture is an animated parody comedy movie loosely based on the Founding Fathers of the United States and the American revolution. In this tongue-in-cheek animated revisionist history, a chainsaw-wielding George Washington assembles a team of rabble rousers – including beer-loving bro Sam Adams, famed scientist Thomas Edison, acclaimed horseman Paul Revere, and a very pissed off Geronimo – to defeat Benedict Arnold and King James in the American Revolution. The voice cast of America: The Motion Picture is formed by Channing Tatum, Olivia Munn, Bobby Moynihan, Judy Greer, Will Forte, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg.

Sophie: A Murder in West Cork

Your dose of documentaries of the weekend on Netflix comes in the docuseries Sophie: A Murder in West Cork. This three-part series covers the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a French woman who had a vacation home in the remote town of Schull, in the West Cork region of Ireland. In December 1996, she was found dead in Schull, where murders simply don’t happen. Sophie’s murder set off an increasingly convoluted quest for justice that spanned decades and cut across national borders.

Fear Street: 1994

FEAR STREET PART 1: 1994

Netflix is getting a big dose of horror content this month, and one of the most notable projects is the Fear Street Trilogy, beginning with Fear Street Part One: 1994. Based on the book series of the same name by R.L. Stine, and as the title says, part one is set in 1994 and follows a group of teenagers who discover that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected to each other – and they may be the next targets as well. Starring are Kiana Madeira, Olivia Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Julia Rehwald, and Fred Hechinger.
