8. Grace And Frankie (Season 5)

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin return for the fifth season of this underrated Netflix Original comedy series about two very different women who become housemates (and friends) after their husbands leave them… for each other. Grace And Frankie is a warm and funny look at the challenges of starting over later in life, with plenty of dysfunctional family moments and dirty jokes. A perfect way to start the new year laughing.

7. Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Recent years have seen an explosion in true crime series, with everything from Making A Murderer to Serial (a podcast) making headlines. The latest addition to Netflix’s true crime catalog is Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, featuring never before heard interviews with this most famous serial killer during his time on death row.

6. Black Earth Rising

This BBC2 series may have aired in the UK in the fall, but viewers on this side of the pond have had to wait until January to see it. Black Earth Rising centers on Kate (Michaela Coel), a Rwanda-born legal investigator who gets pulled into a dangerous case after her adoptive mother gets involved in prosecuting the leader of an African Militia. This is a tense drama, and one that will absolutely get viewers thinking.

5. Kingdom (Season 1)

This Korean Netflix Original Series, Kingdom, is adapted from the web-comic Land Of The Gods, and promises to be an amazing combination of horror/sci-fi and historical drama. Set in the medieval Joseon period, it combines the kind of beautiful sets and costumes that appeal to historical drama lovers… with magic, mystery, and zombies.

4. Medici: The Magnificent

Who wouldn’t want to see Sean Bean in a period piece? Medici: The Magnificent is the follow up to Medici: Masters of Florence - but while the first season focused on Cosimo de’Medici, the second brings the spotlight onto his son, Lorenzo. Definitely a must-watch for anyone after some political and family drama with stunning costumes.

3. Polar

This comic book adaptation is far from the usual world of superheroes, based on the Dark Horse series of the same name. The action-noir film focuses on a retired hitman, forced to fight for his life after someone tries to kill him… and it has all the best bits of the genre, including gore, incredible fight scenes (obviously) and the femme fatale. Polar also features a star-studded cast, including Mads Mikkelsen and Vanessa Hudgens.

2. Ant-Man And The Wasp

Moving back to big-name superheroes, Ant-Man and the Wasp is being added to Netflix’s catalog of Marvel movies. The follow up to 2015’s Ant-Man, this film saw Evangeline Lily finally suit up as the Wasp, the perfect partner for Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. Expect plenty of Marvel’s usual superhero goodness, along with that quirky Ant-Man charm.

1. The Incredibles 2

Finally, we wrap up with one of the other big superhero movies of the year: The Incredibles 2. Fourteen years after the original Incredibles hit screens, we get a chance to catch up with the Parr super-family, and see what they’ve been up to. One for the kids, certainly, but adults are sure to love this animated adventure too.
