Netflix releases a trailer showing off 19 of their upcoming movies and television shows for the year. Originally launched in 1997 as a mail-based DVD rental service, Netflix eventually evolved into a streaming service which is currently outpacing its competition in terms of total subscribers, including Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, and more. Netflix is also a pioneer in its field in terms of offering original content, starting in 2013 with the crime dramedy Lilyhammer, followed by their first feature film, Beasts of No Nation, in 2015.

Now, Netflix is home to hundreds of exclusive streaming shows and movies. Last year saw the release of new seasons of Cobra Kai, The Witcher, You, Sex Education, and the debut of new hits like Squid Game and Sweet Tooth. On the film side, the star-studded action comedy Red Notice broke viewing records for the streaming service, while two Netflix originals, Don't Look Up and The Power of the Dog, were nominated for Best Picture. So far in 2022, Netflix has dropped new seasons of Bridgerton and Ozark, while The Adam Project and The Bubble have held down the film side. Now, the streaming service is looking to ramp up its release of original content for the latter half of the year.

In anticipation of Netflix's Geeked Week, the streamer released a new trailer teasing its upcoming slate of movies and shows for the year. Leading the pack are recognizable titles like Stranger Things season 4, The Umbrella Academy season 3, and Sweet Tooth season 2. Some highly-anticipated new titles include The Gray Man and The Sandman, the latter of which the trailer goes to great effort to highlight with a dramatic reveal of Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer at the end. This will be Netflix's second annual Geeked Week, a five-day virtual fan event that celebrates the streamer's genre slate with exclusive news, sneak peaks, and cast panels. The virtual event is still a few weeks away, scheduled for June 6-10, though Netflix is trying to build anticipation early with this sneak peek. In addition to the aforementioned titles, expect news regarding Locke & Key season 3, Shadow and Bone season 2, and the Chris Hemsworth film Spearhead at Geeked Week, which were also featured in the trailer.

Netflix recently recorded a subscriber loss for the first time in 10 years, which has caused major concern for the future of the world's most popular streaming service. Clearly, their plan to combat this subscriber loss is to continue pumping out content subscribers want to see. Netflix not only has a slew of shows to help deal with churn, such as Stranger Things which returns May 25 after a long hiatus, but exciting new content to entice subscribers. The Gray Man and The Sandman are two titles coming to Netflix this year that have massive franchise potential and could get the streamer out of its recent rut.
