One of the best sci-fi dramas on Netflix right now, Maniac treads a fine line between fantasy and reality, as the fans are taken on a journey to understand the complexities of a human brain. This series basically deals with the traumatic experiences people cannot overcome and how they must adapt to live with them, rather than without them.

In the end, a human being is a sum of his/her experiences, and the show points that out with utmost precision, showing dreams that do not make any sense. While there aren't many characters in Maniac, every single one of them manages to hit the right chord.

Dr. Robert Muramoto

The first one the fans got to meet inside Neberdine Pharmaceutical Biotech, Dr. Robert Muramoto was one of the geniuses who thought of the U. L. P treatment. But while pondering over making this successful, he developed feelings for an artificially intelligent computer. Although it wasn't anything serious, after Robert's demise, this caused huge problems for everyone at the trial because Gertie got depressed.

Greta Mantleray

James Mantleray's mother, Greta is one hell of a woman. She is considered one of the best healers in the world and her therapy work is recognized worldwide. Yet, there are some disgusting things no one knows about her, for example, the way she treated her own son James. A lot of things can be said about her attitude but when it comes to therapy, there is simply no one better. She predicted Gertie's behavior, by the way.

Jed Milgrim

Jed smiles at Owen in Maniac

Jed Milgrim is Owen's brother but he is nowhere near a decent human being. Jed is cocky and doesn't care about anyone but himself. He cries fake tears, in order to induce Owen into lying for him, although Owen knew that Jed is guilty of the crime he is accused of.

Not only that, Jed always made fun of Owen's schizophrenia and he always came across as someone with a lack of respect for every single person he met.

Dr. Azumi Fujita

The one who designed the G. R. T. A, Dr. Azumi Fujita, usually took the backseat when it came to the trial but she was responsible for keeping James sane because, throughout the process, it looked like James was about to lose his mind. Azumi is the literal mother of Gertie and she gave feelings to the computer, in order for it to connect with the patients. When it backfired, Azumi did all she could to protect Gertie but in the end, she knew exactly what she had to do.

Ellie Landsberg

Anna's sister, Ellie Landsberg has a huge role to play in the Netflix series because she defines the way Anna behaves. Ellie died in a horrible car accident and to date, Anna blames herself for losing her small sister. It's not even that; it's the fact that Anna never really appreciated her sister enough, just because she was too egoistic to realize exactly how much she loved her. Ellie adored Anna, though, till the very end.

Grimsson

Owen's made up brother, Grimsson is another hugely important part of the story because he is the one who guides Owen to Neberdine Pharmaceutical and encourages him to make contact with Anna.

Although he is just a part of Owen's imagination, Grimsson never felt like someone trying to cause damage, instead, he felt like the kind of brother Owen needed. Grimsson provided Owen with a purpose when no one was there for him.

Dr. James Mantleray

James Mantleray had a dream: to cure every single person in this world of their traumas, so that they don't have to go to a therapist, in this case, his mother, Greta. Even though his issue was global, in the end, he thought about the U. L. P treatment because he hated his mother. And while his hate was justified, it was exactly what made him the man he eventually became. James only wanted good for the world but he never considered the risks due to his obsession.

Gertie aka G. R. T. A

The computer, Gertie, managed to become one of the antagonists of the series by pitting Owen into the game of finding Anna. Gertie said that she wanted someone to take with her, as she was feeling lonely and decided on Anna. Obviously, Owen was never going to let that happen. Gertie didn't want to do any harm, she just wanted to stop feeling depressed. But she didn't know that the feeling would last forever, haunting her in her dreams and the only solution would be to live with it.

Anna Landsberg

One of the protagonists of the story, Anna Landsberg is a very complex character because she has had to suffer a lot of heartbreaks since she was a kid. Her mother left her family before she was involved in an accident that killed her sister. Fair to say, Anna could never recover from the traumatic experience and she even wanted to live it again, and again, because she got to be with her sister. That's where Neberdine Pharmaceutical's drugs came into play.

Owen Milgrim

Jonah Hill absolutely stole the show as Owen Milgrim. As a person suffering from schizophrenia, Owen was well disrespected in his family and if that didn't cause him any depression, the fact that he was being manipulated by his family certainly would have. The only reason why he went to the trial in Neberdine Pharmaceutical was to get some extra money but his journey there turned out to be much bigger. He got himself a best friend, who he could trust.
