One of the most popular animated kid friendly television programs in recent memory was The Magic School Bus. However, after a storied run on PBS, the show went off the air some twenty years ago. The show was able to find and keep a kid audience by using a magical school bus, as the name implies, to travel time and space and do basically anything imaginable to teach the students about science. Now after all this time off the air, a reboot is on the horizon.
Netflix, the current king of original and repurposed content, is bringing back the show with The Magic School Bus Rides Again. This new take will see the concept adapted to the modern day of advanced technology, but still keep the animated roots of the original. Now, it looks as though the reboot has found its first cast member.
The Wrap is reporting that Kate McKinnon has joined the cast as Ms. Frizzle. If that name sounds familiar, that is because it was the name of the teacher voiced by Lily Tomlin in the original series. However, McKinnon will not be playing the same Ms. Frizzle, and instead portray Valerie's sister Fiona.
For those that are unfamiliar with the character, Ms. Frizzle is as wacky a teacher as they come. Thanks to her magical ride, she is able to take her students on once in a lifetime adventures where the kids get to experience the science they are learning about. Having McKinnon voice the role on paper appears to be a great fit. Her turn as Holtzmann in Ghostbusters should be all the evidence needed to show that she can handle the weirdness of the character and the concept, but also handle the humor incredibly well.
For the reboot, The Wrap reports that subjects like robotics, wearables, and cameras will all be topics that will be investigated from a scientific perspective. With the series adapting itself for science-related topics that kids nowadays will be interested in, Netflix could be a great home for the series.
With McKinnon now on board the project, it will be interesting to see what other types of actors Netflix is able to attract for the kid roles. With it being animated, their ages are less important, but McKinnon's addition could make it even more likely that other well-known talents could be added. These announcements could start coming shortly depending on how quickly Netflix wants to get the series into production.
The Magic School Bus Rides Again is currently without a release date.
