Fantasy works great in live-action film, despite the archaic belief that the limits of special-effects technology would always keep the genre on the Hollywood fringe. These limitations no longer exist. Instead, the question is when and how much special effects are used, with the debate still raging over issues like practical effects versus CGI. Fantasy is now a huge genre on its own, no longer limited to cartoons or corny B-movies, and video games are currently a major source of inspiration for what makes it to TV or the big screen.

The Witcher is one recent example of a successful video game that became an equally popular live-action series. With one major success story under its belt, Netflix is looking for more, and there are rumors galore that the big red N has turned its eye to The Legend of Zelda franchise. This makes a lot of sense on paper. The land of Hyrule already enjoys a devoted fanbase that spans two generations of gamers. It's interesting to think about what actors could be cast in some of the prominent roles, should a live-action series become a reality.

Timothée Chalamet - Skull Kid

Timothée Chalamet already has a resume that includes otherwordly, eccentric, or ethereal characters, so why not cast him as the mysterious, wild Skull Kid? His resume includes various period films and precocious youth, but also those with a profound and serious side, like Paul Atreides in the upcoming Dune

Skull Kid appears in various incarnations throughout the franchise, but is best known for his roles in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

Michelle Yeoh - Impa

Michelle Yeoh as Impa

Impa has to be played by an actor who can be serious and solemn, but also an action hero. Michelle Yeoh's recent appearance in Star Trek: Discovery as Philippa Georgiou is just the latest role in a career that's been defined by adventure films.

She often plays a guardian figure and a wise mentor who can also act as a leader and warrior, which fits Impa's character perfectly.

Hugo Weaving - Agahnim

Hugo Weaving's past roles include some amazing variety, in both main and supporting roles, and he's acted as both heroes and villains. That's one of the reasons he would do so well as the main antagonist from one of the most iconic games in the series, A Link to the Past.

It's important to note that this evil wizard is Ganon's avatar outside of the Dark World, and Ganon rises from his corpse after the final boss fight in the game. However, it's never explained that the "avatar" of Ganon, in this case, was a devoted follower or simply an empty vessel for Ganon's spirit.

Jeff Bridges - Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule

Jeff Bridges as Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule

Jeff Bridges has played a variety of characters in live-action films and given his voice to several animated characters, so he could easily play one of Hyrule's noted monarchs if Netflix decides to make their adaptation an animated series in the spirit of Castlevania.

Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule is Zelda's father, and he often appears to Link in the form of the Old Man in various games throughout the franchise, with offers of weapons or advice.

Idris Elba - Sahasrahla

Idris Elba as Sahasrahla

Idris Elba is immediately recognizable as Heimdall from the Marvel franchise, but his roles include a variety of characters that combine the mastery of magic with ancient wisdom. One example is his recent appearance as Roland in the recent Dark Tower series.

Sahasrahla is another mystical leader. He only appears in one game, A Link to the Past, but his status as a descendant of the Seven Wise Men and an Elder in Kakariko Village gives him a place in the body of lore that encompasses every game.

Amber Heard - Princess Ruto

Ruto is a princess in every sense of the word, and she'll never let you forget it. Amber Heard's most recent role as Mera, in Aquamancould have sealed the deal as the best person for this role, but so does her previous roles in various dramas where she plays a terrifying yet compelling character.

Princess Ruto is a fan favorite, getting more on-screen time than Link and compared to other characters who also have supporting roles in the story. She helps him various times, and throughout the course of the plot in Ocarina of Time, she turns out to be the Sage of Water.

Tom Hiddleston - Ganondorf

A charismatic and likable villain who roamed the halls of power in Hyrule in Link to the Past for years before he is discovered, Ganon is one of Nintendo's most notorious villains. He's appeared as the main antagonist in virtually every game in The Legend of Zelda franchise, so the actor who takes on this role had better be up to the task.

That's why one possible choice is Tom Hiddleston. He's already made a name for himself playing the complex and always entertaining Loki in the Marvel movies, which is just one example of his acting prowess.

Patrick Stewart - Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule

There are only two kings that stand out in the lore of Hyrule, and this is the second, Daphnes Nohansen, who appears in The Wind Waker. His role is mostly that of a theme character who tells the protagonist the history of his country, but he's also an adventurer in his own right, as he sails the seas looking for a hero.

Patrick Stewart plays the same kind of intrepid adventurer with a dignified, almost royal status in the X-Men films and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

It's not just the success of the Spiderman franchise that makes Tom Holland an ideal choice to take on the role. Peter Parker is also an iconic character that stands as a flagship for his corporate owners, very much like the character of Link.

He also starred in the recent Netflix film, The Devil All the TimeBoth roles prove he can pull off being an action hero along with a leading man who can also get physical.

Florence Pugh - Princess Zelda

Zelda isn't your average princess. She's wise beyond her years, deeply philosophical, and devoted to the service of her people. Florence Pugh often plays roles that have a lot of imagination but also some solemnity and gravitas, along with being both powerful and dangerous. Recent examples include is her role as dedicated artist Amy March in Little Women and the vengeful Dani from Midsommar.

As the titular character of the series, whoever takes on the role of Princess of Hyrule should be an actor like Pugh, who always seems deeply connected to the character she's playing.
