Keanu Reeves may soon become a superhero, thanks to Netflix's Past Midnight. Netflix continues to look for new original content to add to their library, and aren't shying away from the type of content that has made them so popular. After finding great success with Marvel TV by bringing Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher to life, they're still looking to find more superhero content. In an effort to branch out beyond Marvel, they've already ordered a superhero series starring Michael B. Jordan.
While the project is sure to only become a bigger priority after Jordan's praised performance in Black Panther, the new series still leaves Netflix without an original movie franchise of their own. They're turning Bright into a franchise now, and remain committed to bringing tons of content to subscribers in the coming years. One of those project could be the start of their own superhero franchise, and may just star Reeves.
Deadline reports Netflix has acquired a script written by T.J. Fixman (Ratchet & Clank) called Past Midnight that will be directed by Dope's Rick Famuyiwa. The report describes Past Midnight as "a feature about a new kind of vigilante superhero." Reportedly, they are hoping to get John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, to star as this vigilante hero. Adding even more talent to the project, it will also be produced by Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
If this all does fall into place, it is difficult to imagine Past Midnight not being one of Netflix's most anticipated and talented projects. Reeves is in the middle of a resurgence thanks to his other vigilante portrayal, while this would be his second superhero gig after Constantine in 2005. The ability for Past Midnight to pull him in would go a long way in legitimizing the project and assuring this isn't a movie that gets stuck in development. If the deal does close, they would have to wait until Reeves is done filming John Wick 3 to get this moving, so we could be looking at a 2019 release at the earliest.
This feature also marks the second film Famuyiwa signed on to direct this week. It was just announced that he's helming the adaptation of Black Hole. There's currently no word on how quickly that project will come together, but thanks to the package Past Midnight already has, that is likely to be what Famuyiwa does next. But, that could all change if Keanu's deal doesn't happen and the project goes back to square one in its hunt for a star.
Past Midnight is currently in development and does not have a release date.
