The trailer for upcoming Netflix series The End of the F**king World reveals a very dark comedy. If there is one thing some of the best series on Netflix do very well, it is balance light and dark, hope and horror, comedy and drama - whether that means the occasional hopeful ending in an episode of Black Mirror or adding a character for comic relief on Stranger Things.

And it looks like that same balance will be put to good use in upcoming series The End of the F**king World. Based on the same titled (without the asterisks) comic book by Charles S. Foreman, it tells the story of teenagers James and Alyssa. She is an aggressive loner. He is possibly a psychopath who is thinking about murder - a lot. She starts to fall for him, and he pretends to fall in love with her, in order to figure out when and how he is going to kill her. Instead, the two take off on an adventure in a stolen car and for the first time, James starts to feel something. A sensation he does not particularly like.

Netflix has released the trailer for the series - which is already available in the UK - and in spite of the serious and potentially frightening subject matter, it is clear that this show is a comedy. It seems to be from James' point of view - in contrast to the comic where characters take turns sharing their perspective - and it looks like his cold deadpan provides a humorous contrast to Alyssa's biting wit.

James and Alyssa sit on a bench in The End of the F***ing world.

The series stars Alex Lawther (The Imitation Game, Goodbye Christopher Robin) as James. This marks Lawther's return to Netflix, after playing main character Kenny in the season three episode of Black Mirror "Shut Up and Dance". Playing Alyssa is Jessica Barden (The Lobster, Penny Dreadful), while Steve Oram (The World's End) plays James' father Phil. Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones), Wunmi Mosaku (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice), Navin Chowdrey (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and Christine Bottomley (Fearless) also star.

The End of the F**king World looks like it follows the same dark comedy style that Netflix has used successfully on Orange is the New Black and I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. It may be only one of a number of different shows and movie coming to Netflix in 2018. But if the trailer is any indication, it is certain to be a show that stands out from the crowd.
