Netflix just introduced their new animated series, The Dragon Prince, from Avatar: The Last Airbender writer Aaron Ehasz. Netflix has not only been growing their live-action original content, they also have been paying special attention to their animation brand. The Dragon Prince is their latest endeavor, but by no means their only one. Matt Groening’s Disenchantment, another fantasy animated series, is set to premiere on Netflix on August 17.

Ehasz also worked as a writer and story editor on both the original run on Fox of Futuramawhich was canceled in 2003 and the revival by Comedy Central in 2009. Between the cancellation and the revival, he had time to head over to Nickelodeon to become the head writer and co-executive producer of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a series about a young martial artist who has to master four different elemental fighting styles and bring balance to his war-torn land. The series was critically acclaimed and spawned a sequel in The Legend of Korra in 2012.

Netflix tweeted the poster and the announcement of The Dragon Prince. The series is about two human princes from warring lands who form a bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them. Their goal is to bring peace to their lands. The poster features an impressive dragon looming over what looks like to be the main characters. According to the poster, it’s coming soon. However, it is likely the show will premiere sometime in September. Take a look at the poster below.

Justin Richmond is a co-creator on The Dragon Prince. He was a game developer on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and the game director on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Ehasz and Richmond co-founded the multimedia studio Wonderstorm, which is working on The Dragon Prince and a game set in the same world. Ehasz and Richmond will both be at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, speaking on a panel about their new project on Saturday, July 21 at 11:00am PT in Room 25ABC. Joining them will be executive producer Giancarlo Volpe, who previously worked as a frequent director on Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It is expected that they will give a sneak peak into The Dragon Prince.

Netflix has found success with their original animated series with BoJack Horseman, Big Mouth, Castlevania and Aggretsuko. Netflix is no doubt hoping that The Dragon Prince will also become a hit. The Dragon Prince has aspects that are reminiscent of Avatar: The Last Airbender as both deal with enemies turning into friends and young people going on a larger-than-life quest to bring peace to warring lands. Ehasz has been down this road before and can bring his experience to this project.
