Netflix Sets Chris Rock Standup Special for Valentine's Day Premiere

Netflix will debut their new Chris Rock stand-up special Tamborine on Valentine's Day, the streaming service has revealed. It's the first new stand-up special from Rock in ten years. The announcement comes after Netflix released a mysterious "tamborine" teaser without explaining what "tamborine" was. This continues a recent trend of Netflix marketing that only briefly builds intrigue, then pays off with surprise releases. That trend reached epic proportions when the service revealed the trailer for The Cloverfield Paradox during Super Bowl LII, then announced the film would become available immediately after the game.

A stand-up since 1984, Chris Rock first rose to national prominence as a cast member on SNL. Rock scored his first HBO stand-up special in 1994 with Big Ass Jokes, but it was his 1996 special Bring the Pain that would rocket him into the pantheon of America's stand-up comics. Two more acclaimed HBO specials followed: 1999's Bigger and Blacker and 2004's Never Scared. His fifth and final special for HBO, Kill the Messenger, came in 2008. During that span, Rock also developed into a successful film actor and producer. He also won acclaim for his HBO talk show The Chris Rock Show. The multi talented Rock has hosted the Oscars twice, the last time coming in 2016.

Like everyone else in the stand-up world, Chris Rock has now made the jump over from HBO to Netflix. In a new clip, Netflix paid off their "tamborine" tease by revealing Rock's new special, set to debut on Valentine's Day. See the Chris Rock-less Tamborine reveal clip above.

Chris Rock The Academy Awards

Tamborine continues something of a revival trend for famous stand-ups, spurred by Netflix (and their bottomless pockets). Last year, Jerry Seinfeld returned to the club that gave him his start in the 1970s for Jerry Before Seinfeld. Seinfeld also moved his popular web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee over to the service. Judd Apatow also went back to his stand-up roots in the special Judd Apatow: The Return. Dave Chappelle too made something of a triumphant return to the front ranks of stand-up comedy with his specials Equanimity and The Bird Revelation. Netflix even lured David Letterman out of retirement, albeit for an interview show, and not to revisit his (way) long-gone stand-up days. Scoring Chris Rock's first stand-up special in ten years marks one more triumph for the streaming service.

And Rock's relationship with Netflix doesn't end with Tamborine. In April, Netflix debuts The Week Of, a comedy starring Rock and his pal Adam Sandler as nervous parents bonding during the days leading up to their kids' wedding. Tamborine likely will be a bit edgier than the Sandler film, given Rock's fondness for tackling touchy subject matter in his stand-up comedy.
