Naturally, Netflix's 2022 movie preview doesn't include all of their upcoming 2022 movies but instead shows a select group of films designed to span various genres and spark renewed interest in the streaming platform's offerings. The teaser also reveals that new movies will be released on Netflix once per week throughout the year, which aligns with Netflix's promise of sustained new content from 2021. This means that over half of Netflix's upcoming new 2022 movies are included in the latest teaser, making the clip a must-see for those curious about what exactly is in Netflix's 2022 release roster.
The assortment of star power and sheer quality of all the clips included are particularly impressive, although the new Netflix movie teaser offers little tangible information on these releases beyond what can be gleaned from the movie excerpts themselves. This said, the teaser does include first-looks at several highly anticipated releases, including Guillermo Del Toro's animated feature Pinocchio and Rian Johnson's Knives Out 2. The Mother
Directed by Niki Caro, The Mother centers on an assassin who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she abandoned earlier in life. Jennifer Lopez stars as the titular, deadly matriarch, while Risen's Joseph Fiennes, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Omari Hardwick have also been cast in undisclosed roles. Despite being touted as an action film, the first clip of The Mother used in Netflix's teaser is rather serene, with Lopez sailing across a tundra at dusk before more predictably settling on Lopez saving her daughter on a motorbike. Although there is no official release date set for The Mother, its inclusion in Netflix's 2022 preview video confirms Caro's film will release before the end of the year.
The Adam Project
Free Guy's Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds reunite to deliver the story of a time-traveling pilot who teams up with his younger self and his late father to come to terms with his past while saving the future. Reynolds is as close to guaranteed high-grossing box office as it gets in 2022, with Netflix banking on his services once again after the rampant success of Red Notice. The Adam Project is teased in several differing clips from Netflix's preview video, with Reynolds and his younger self (Walker Scobell) wielding a lightsaber-Esque weapon before flying away in a futuristic jet. The Adam Project is set for an initial release on March 11th, 2022.
Day Shift
Day Shift centers on a hard-working, blue-collar dad whose mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires. Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco are set to star in the horror-comedy, with Netflix's new teaser showing several clips of Foxx in a high-speed chase and being hunted by a pale vampire. As with The Mother before it, Day Shift's high-octane narrative is set to debut in 2022, although Netflix has not set an official release date yet.
The Gray Man
The most expensive movie ever made by Netflix, The Gray Man was assigned a mammoth $200 million budget to tell the story of a former CIA agent being hunted as an international fugitive. The Gray Man looks to be a highly ambitious project for the streaming giant akin to 2021's Red Notice, with the Russo brothers' upcoming movie bringing together the MCU's Chris Evans, Bridgerton's Rege-Jean Page, and James Bond's Ana De Armas alongside Ryan Gosling for a new action spectacular. The early clips shown from The Gray Man appear scintillating, with Gosling battling enemies atop a London bus while Evans laughs at him from a remote viewing platform. Initial reports suggest a July 2022 release date for The Gray Man, although Netflix's official date remains as just "2022" for now.
Escape From Spiderhead
Joseph Kosinski's sci-fi thriller sees two convicts confront their pasts in a facility run by a visionary who gives them emotion-altering drugs. Set in the near future, Escape From Spiderhead appears to be a real mind-bending affair, with Thor's Chris Hemsworth taking on the lead role of a man simply known as "Abnesti." Not much is shown by the Netflix teaser regarding Spiderhead other than Hemsworth's character, who addresses the audience directly, but if the original dystopian short story by George Saunders is anything to go by, Escape From Spiderhead will be packed with twists and turns.
Slumberland
Slumberland director Francis Lawrence is best known for his high-budget fantasies, including I Am Legend, The Hunger Games, and Constantine - meaning Slumberland is almost guaranteed to be a quality rip-roaring adventure. Based on Winsor McCay's beloved comic book Little Nemo in Slumberland, Slumberland centers on one girl's journey to find her late father in a perilous dream world. She is led by Jason Momoa's Flip, who is seen in the 2022 Netflix preview atop a magical lighthouse beckoning audiences to "go places your dreams can't dream of." Slumberland is set for a currently unspecified 2022 release date.
Falling For Christmas
Netflix may well be delivering its greatest festive gift of all via Lindsay Lohan's return to acting in 2022. Although details remain incredibly scant for now, Lohan's latest turn will be in Netflix's festive rom-com Falling For Christmas, where she will play an engaged hotel heiress who suffers amnesia in a skiing accident before waking up in the arms of a handsome stranger. Netflix's latest teaser offers a brief glimpse of Lohan in action as she walks past an adorned Christmas tree, with Falling For Christmas set for a release around 2022's festive period.
Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio
Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio is certainly poised to deliver a darker version of the Disney classic, with Del Toro himself confirming his Pinocchio will be spiritually much closer to the original 1883 Carlo Collodi novel The Adventures of Pinocchio. The first looks at Netflix's Pinocchio confirm this stance, with the streaming giant's teaser showing a threadbare marionette puppet interacting with Ewan McGregor's Sebastian J. Cricket in the stop-motion animated movie. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio is set for a December 2022 release exclusively on Netflix.
A Madea Homecoming
The 12th official movie in the Madea film series also marks creator Tyler Perry's Netflix debut for the titular character he has been playing since 1999. A Madea Homecoming will see Madea deal with an eruption of drama at her great-grandson's college graduation, hinting at new levels of hilarity for the now Netflix-backed franchise. Netflix's teaser offers little additional information on A Madea Homecoming, with just one shot of Perry's Madea saying "Hallelujah!" on her doorstep. A Madea Homecoming releases on February 25th, 2022.
Boo!
Marlon Wayans' latest Netflix movie looks riotous from the offset, with Boo!'s story focussing on a teenage girl (Priah Ferguson) who accidentally unleashes a mischievous spirit on Halloween before teaming up with her father (Respect's Marlon Wayans) to save her town. The initial clips of Boo! provided by Netflix prove Wayans' new film is as zany as it sounds, showing Ferguson's unnamed protagonist screaming before Wayans is choked by an animated pair of decorative arms. Although there remains no official release date for Boo!, it is likely to be a big part of Netflix's Halloween release roster in October 2022.
They Cloned Tyrone
They Cloned Tyrone is one of the more clandestine movies contained in Netflix's teaser trailer, only known as a sci-fi mystery with comedic elements about a trio who uncovers a shady government conspiracy. They Cloned Tyrone marks Juel Taylor's feature film directorial debut and will feature Star Wars' John Boyega as Fontaine, Jamie Foxx as Slick Charles, and Teyonah Parris as Yo-Yo. All three characters can be seen in the Netflix trailer waiting in an elevator, guns drawn, before taking a deep breath together. They Cloned Tyrone has no official release date at the time of writing.
Carter
Netflix's big K-drama and Korean movie push continues into 2022, with the teaser unveiling several scenes for the explosive Carter. Carter sees the eponymous agent, played by Joo Won, wake up one day in a motel room without any recollection of his identity before following orders to join a dangerous mission. This mission likely involves the rescue of a young girl after Netflix's preview shows a girl being stolen by a masked assailant from under Carter's care. Carter is currently set for release sometime in 2022.
The School For Good And Evil
Based on Somen Chainani's 2013 novel of the same name, Netflix's The School for Good and Evil follows the adventures of best friends Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie), who are kidnapped and inducted into a magical, warring world. The School for Good and Evil boasts a highly impressive supporting cast, with Charlize Theron's Lady Lesso, Kerry Washington's Professor Dovey, and Michelle Yeoh's Professor Anemone all shown practicing magic in Netflix's 2022 teaser. Despite receiving a significant amount of coverage in the Netflix preview, however, The School for Good and Evil is yet to receive a concrete release date outside of its 2022 billing.
Enola Holmes 2
Millie Bobby Brown is set for a triumphant return as the irrepressible Enola in Enola Holmes 2, with Henry Cavill's character Sherlock Holmes looking set for increased screen time alongside her. Although Netflix is yet to release an official synopsis for Enola Holmes 2's story, Enola can be seen running through the streets of Victorian London in the Netflix teaser, before cutting to Sherlock smoking his Meerschaum pipe, Enola dancing, and finally, Enola and Sherlock breaking the fourth wall as they walk through a darkly lit alleyway. With Enola Holmes 2's production only wrapping in January 2022, expect director Harry Bradbeer's sequel to see an end-of-year release on Netflix's platform.
Tall Girl 2
Tall Girl 2 sees the return of the vertically-blessed Jodi Kreyman (Ava Michelle), who begins to find her newfound popularity working against her at Ruby Bridges High School. Comedic pair Angela Kinsey (The Office) and Steve Zahn (The White Lotus) also reprise their roles as Jodi's loving parents in the second installment of this feel-good, teen rom-com franchise. Tall Girl 2 is set for a February 11th release date on Netflix, with the teaser preview showing Jodi strutting confidently down her high school halls.
End Of The Road
Queen Latifah executive produces and stars as Brenda in End of the Road, a new Netflix thriller that follows Brenda and her family as they become targeted by a mysterious killer in the isolated New Mexico desert. Netflix's 2022 preview shows several quick cuts of End of the Road's scenes, skipping from a panoramic view of the desert to Queen Latifah addressing the audience before showing an unnamed character (played by Fast & Furious franchise Tej actor Ludacris) driving away from danger. Hustle
Hustle is quickly shaping up to be one of Netflix's most anticipated 2022 releases, with a stellar cast of Adam Sandler (Murder Mystery), Queen Latifah (Taxi), and Robert Duvall (Apocalypse Now) adding real weight to Hustle's sports-comedy narrative. Hustle will follow Adam Sandler's Stanley Beren, a washed-up basketball scout who discovers a mercurial, generational talent outside of Madrid and takes him back to America to groom him for the NBA. Netflix's teaser allows a peek at five clips from Hustle, ranging from basketball training to Beren giving his new recruit a stirring speech. Adam Sandler's Hustle movie is set for a 2022 release date, with no specific month yet announced by Netflix.
We Have A Ghost
Based on Geoff Manaugh’s short story Ernest, Netflix's new movie follows Kevin (Niles Fitch) and his family, who find a ghost named Ernest (David Harbour) haunting their new home and get turned into overnight social media sensations. We Have A Ghost has just one scene featured in the Netflix 2022 teaser, which sees Kevin and his friend scream as Ernest's ghostly figure slides across their car's windshield. As with End of the Road before it, We Have A Ghost is in post-production for Netflix, meaning the supernatural comedy will likely see a release date closer to the end of 2022.
Me Time
Kevin Hart stars as a stay-at-home dad who signs up for a wild weekend with his effervescent best friend Huck (Infinite's Mark Wahlberg) - before things go completely sideways. The 2022 Netflix teaser alludes to as much, showing Wahlberg and Hart in Bboy uniforms surrounded by a raucous crowd as they threaten to "stay up all night." Filming reportedly wrapped for Me Time in October 2021, making a summer 2022 release date increasingly likely for the new buddy comedy.
The Good Nurse
Netflix audiences are set for a harrowing tale in the form of true-crime thriller The Good Nurse, which chronicles the hunt for, and capture of American serial killer Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), who murdered over 300 patients during his 16-year career as a nurse. Scenes from a Marriage's Jessica Chastain also stars as the eponymous nurse Swatty who helped end Cullen's horrific reign of terror. The Netflix teaser gives a brief glimpse of both its stars in action, showing Chastain's Swatty staring coldly in what looks to be an interrogation room before cutting to Redmayne as Cullen wearing medical scrubs. There is no current release date set for The Good Nurse outside of its 2022 billing.
Don't Blame Karma! (¿Qué culpa tiene el karma?)
Of all the 2022 releases listed here, Don't Blame Karma! is perhaps the most mysterious, with the upcoming Mexican drama having very little online presence to date. Don't Blame Karma! will focus on Sara (Aislinn Derbez), a petulant dressmaker who blames karma for her bad luck before her sister Lucy (Renata Notini) forces her to re-think her disgruntled approach to life. The Netflix teaser backs up Don't Blame Karma!'s premise, showing Lucy kissing her partner before pulling away to reveal an angry-looking Sara. Don't Blame Karma! will release at some point in 2022.
Wendell & Wild
Wendell and Wild is quite the cinematic amalgam, billed as another Netflix 2022 stop-motion animated dark fantasy comedy horror film from The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick. Co-written by Selick, Jordan Peele, and Keegan-Michael Key, Wendell & Wild follows the two titular scheming demon brothers, voiced by Key and Peele, who must face their evil-hunting sister Nelly after escaping the Underworld. The comedy duo can be seen panicking in the new Netflix teaser as a spider falls from the ceiling above them. Originally slated for an October 2021 release date, Wendell & Wild has since been pushed back to an unspecified slot in 2022.
Luckiest Girl Alive
Based on Jessica Knoll's mystery novel of the same name, Luckiest Girl Alive chronicles the story of Ani (Mila Kunis), a successful magazine editor who hides deep scars from her traumatic past. American Horror Story duo Finn Wittrock and Connie Britton are set for supporting roles, while Jennifer Beals is also signed onto the production in an undisclosed role. Netflix's latest preview video shows just one Luckiest Girl Alive clip, in which Mila Kunis' Ani walks through a revolving door with trepidation. Luckiest Girl Alive currently has no release date set.
You People
Black-ish creator Kenya Barris brings together an all-star cast of Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, David Duchovny, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for his Netflix comedy You People, whose name was only revealed via Netflix's 2022 movie teaser in February. In typical Barris fashion, You People touchingly follows a new couple and their families who find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations, and generational differences. Previously given the moniker "Untitled Kenya Barris Comedy Project," the newly named You People is granted significant screen-time in the Netflix teaser. Hill, Murphy, Duchovny, and Louis-Dreyfus sit around a culturally diverse dinner table before Jonah Hill's character is body-checked on a basketball court (much to Murphy's delight).
The Takedown
Jurassic World's Omar Sy and Elle's Laurent Lafitte star in high-octane French thriller The Takedown as two men vying to protect their respective families from harm. The Takedown clips shown in Netflix's teaser look scintillating, with Sy and Lafitte introducing their children before the camera cuts to the two men throwing punches and wrecking a pair of brightly colored Jeeps on a bridge. There is currently no set release date outside of the year 2022 for The Takedown.
The Sea Beast
After rife speculation that The Sea Beast would be delayed until 2023, Netflix's new movie teaser confirms that director Chris Williams' (Big Hero 6) animated feature has stayed firmly on the 2022 release slate. In a story that is somewhat reminiscent of Luca's unfairly hated sea monsters, The Sea Beast is set to follow a young girl who stows away on the ship of a revered sea monster hunter, who himself is forced to change his worldly perceptions when he discovers that the girl has befriended a legendary creature he has previously pursued. Due to the early stages of its production, The Sea Beast has not released any names for its voice cast to date, although the Netflix teaser does at least grant a prolonged look at a majestic creature rising from the depths of the ocean to capsize a ship.
The Mothership
The Mothership follows Sara Morse (Bruised's Halle Berry) as she discovers a strange extraterrestrial object underneath her home that may link to her husband's mysterious disappearance one year earlier. The Mothership appears very Spielberg-esque in its approach, with the Netflix preview showing Morse and her family investigating the dirt around their farm before cutting to a sheriff and other onlookers witnessing bright lights in the sky. The Mothership is currently in post-production and is expected to meet the deadlines for a fall 2022 release.
Knives Out 2
Rian Johnson's highly anticipated second whodunnit acts as the bookend of Netflix's 2022 preview video, which shows a star-studded cast boarding a yacht on the shores of Spetses, Greece. Daniel Craig is confirmed to return for Netflix's Knives Out 2 as dogged detective Benoit Blanc in what Johnson has described as a standalone mystery designed in the mold of Hercule Poirot. Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathyrn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, and Ethan Hawke have all additionally been cast in undisclosed roles. Knives Out 2 is set to premiere in late 2022 as one of the biggest names on Netflix's 2022 release slate.
