Warning! This article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 7 #1The Guardians of the Galaxy are, by nature, some of the greatest heroes in the cosmos, and Nebula is no exception. Sure, they may not be the biggest powerhouse-team out there, but their unwavering willingness to go up against cosmic threats and–more often than not–come out on top makes them heroes worth remembering. Now, Nebula just made herself the MVP of this already impressive squad by unveiling a new power that will help make the Guardians way more impactful (and keep them alive for longer).

There have been a number of different iterations of the Guardians of the Galaxy across a few universes. The first, for instance, wasn’t even set within Marvel’s Earth-616, and actually took place in the distant future of a unique universe–even one with their very own Cosmic Ghost Rider decades before Frank Castle filled that role. However, that quickly changed when the team started to get some notoriety, and with that change also came an entirely new lineup. Now, the Guardians of the Galaxy consist of heroes who are definitely more familiar to modern Marvel fans (especially fans of the MCU). The current roster is Star-Lord, Gamora, Nebula, Drax, and Mantis, and as it stands, Nebula is the one with the power to make this lineup the best one in history–and that power is precognition (well, sort of).

Nebula has a Probability Engine, Allowing Her to See Every Probable Future

Nebula's new power in Guardians of the Galaxy.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #1 by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Kev Walker, the current Guardians show up on a planet that is about to be decimated by a world-ending force akin to Galactus. So, they are attempting to get everyone who still lives on this fairly deserted world off the planet as soon as possible. During the mission, Nebula tells the group what their chances of success are looking like, noting that there is a 79% chance the town they’re in is run by local gangs, and a 53% chance they’re also deserters. Nebula calculated these numbers through a probability engine that has been implanted inside her cybernetic mind. Not only that, but she was able to do so with almost no intimate knowledge of her surroundings aside from what she was physically seeing and experiencing, and she came to those numbers in a matter of seconds.

This is just a taste of what Nebula can do with this new upgrade. The implication here is that Nebula can assess a situation to the point of near precognition in an instant, which practically eliminates any surprises the Guardians may face in any given battle, and gives them a significant advantage over their enemies. For a team that doesn’t have a cosmic ‘heavy-hitter’ on the squad (like Thor, Captain Marvel, or Nova, for example), this advantage is assuredly a welcomed one. Now, the Guardians can have a clear picture of every mission they undertake. Not only in terms of having accurate readings of their risk level, but also immediate access to the most precise approximate knowledge as possible in regard to every aspect of the mission itself.

It’s true that Nebula can’t actually see into the future, meaning her probability engine only does as-advertised and just shows her the most probable information about any situation. But, as shown in this issue, that is more than enough to give the Guardians of the Galaxy the extra advantage they need to take on world-ending threats with confidence, which is why Nebula’s new power makes her the team’s MVP.
