It goes without saying that any list of the greatest sitcoms of all time would be incomplete without the mention of The Office, a show that is widely considered by many to be one of the most perfect executions of the mockumentary format in order to create something incredibly funny, surprisingly engrossing, and truly heartfelt in some of its most touching and poignant scenes.
One of the major reasons why everyone loves The Office is because of its brilliant cast of memorable characters, each of whom ends up carving a place of their own in the hearts of fans who adore this show. One such recurring character who plays a major role in the show is Holly Flax, Toby's much-welcome replacement who ends up being Michael's much-sought-for life partner. This character might certainly be quite a welcome inclusion in the cast of The Office, but there are still several things about her that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Let's take a deeper look into this anomaly.
She Didn't Really Need To Break Up With Michael After She Shifted To Nashua
Holly and Michael had an excellent relationship, and it was pretty clear to everyone that they were meant for each other. Bonds like this could never really break, regardless of how massive the distance may be.
So, the fact that Holly thought otherwise and found the distance between Nashua and Scranton to be too much was quite stupid. How did she not realize just how perfect Michael really was?
Her Relationship With A.J. Felt Completely Unnecessary
After Michael goes to Nashua in a bid to meet Holly, he finds out that she's actually started dating another salesman by the name of A.J. here.
This completely breaks Michael's heart — and every viewers' too, for that matter! Regardless of who Holly might've dated, it was obvious that her soulmate was going to be Michael only. So, the mere idea of a third party like A.J. souring these proceedings seems completely unnecessary.
The Episode Where She Tracks Michael Is Hilarious... But Completely Unbelievable
In "The Search", Michael loses his phone and is forced to roam the streets of Scranton aimlessly. While Dwight and Erin try their hardest to track Michael's movements, only Holly can think on the same wavelength as the Regional Manager, and finally manages to track him down in one of the more memorable moments in The Office.
While this episode is certainly memorable for all the right reasons, one has to mention the fact that the mere idea of Holly having such a strong connection to Michael that she's able to track him with instinct alone is quite a stupid idea indeed.
For HR, She Is Ridiculously Comfortable With PDA
After finally getting back together with Holly, both she and Michael can't wait to show the world that they're finally in a relationship... and by the world, we mean Dunder Mifflin Scranton.
This leads to an extreme amount of PDA in the office, to the point where an intervention needed to be held to sort this out. It's ironic since this time it's actually the HR who's not following the code of conduct in the office — something that is the crux of her job role!
It Was Extremely Irresponsible Of Her To Do It With Michael In The Office
However, PDA was the least of Michael and Holly's concerns. There was a moment before their breakup when Michael and Holly go so far as to sleeping together in the office — a raunchy act that leads to severe repercussions when the office is robbed.
This shouldn't have happened in the first place if Holly had taken her HR duties seriously — how did she even think that getting down and dirty in the office was even a remotely good idea, to begin with?!
The Fact That Her Engagement Ring Cost Michael A Three-Year Salary Is Hard To Believe
While this might be more of a gag, it's still quite unbelievable to hear that Michael got an engagement ring for Holly that cost him a three-year salary!
Surely he should've realized how foolhardy of a decision this was, especially given the fact that there were bound to be a ton of expenses coming his way later on?
Their Engagement Felt Like A Contrived Way To Write Out Michael Out Of The Show
While there's no denying the fact that watching Michael get hitched is easily one of the best and most satisfying moments in The Office, this moment ends with a rather heartbreaking revelation that Michael Scott would be leaving Dunder Mifflin Scranton.
Given the fact that Steve Carell's contract was ending as is, this moment suddenly feels cheap since it has to serve as an excuse for Michael to leave as well without feeling too out-of-place.
It's Certainly Somewhat Selfish Of Holly To Make Michael Leave Everything And Shift To Colorado
While it's great that Michael was willing to do everything possible to ensure that he and Holly can live a great life together, one has to admit that it's quite selfish on Holly's end to pretty much force Michael into going to Colorado with her.
Surely she realized that she is effectively forcing a person to move from an area where all his friends and memories reside, right?
It's Never Clarified As To Whether Her And Michael Married Or Not
After Steve Carell's departure, we never get to find out the fate of Michael and Holly's marriage.
While Michael does come back in the season finale, all he does is talk about his kids with nary a peep about the wedding. It's possible that maybe they had a quiet and private ceremony... but it's hard to believe that someone like Michael who clearly wanted a big wedding would settle for anything less.
It's Weird How No One In The Office Talks About Michael And Holly
If Michael had his wedding, then it was only a given that all the people in the office would be invited to it, making it a major talking point in the series.
However, not only does the office not mention the wedding at all, but most people have pretty much nothing to say or ask about when it comes to Michael and Holly. Even if the wedding hadn't happened yet, surely they would've talked about something pertaining to Michael — after all, wouldn't he at least call Pam and Jim to update them about his life?
