National Treasure: Edge of History star Lyndon Smith says the show will be like mini-movies. Released in 2004, National Treasure was a massive box office success for Disney with its recipe of an old-fashioned treasure hunt, secret codes, and star-studded cast. Starring Nicolas Cage, the film follows historian and code-breaker Ben Gates (Cage) as he embarks on a quest with his friends Riley (Justin Bartha) and Abigail (Diane Kruger) to uncover a treasure hidden by the Founding Fathers. National Treasure spawned a sequel, Book of Secrets, which returned characters from the first film, including Ben’s father, Patrick (Jon Voight), and introduced his mother, Emily (Helen Mirren).

Following National Treasure: Book of Secrets, rumors circulated that a third installment of the action-adventure film was in the works. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Cage have expressed their interest in teaming up again for National Treasure 3, but the film remains stuck in development. However, last year, Disney announced that a National Treasure TV show featuring protagonist Jess Morales (Lisette Olivera) was happening. Last month, Disney+ debuted the teaser trailer for National Treasure: Edge of History, which revealed a closer look at Jess, a young DREAMer.

Now, one of the new faces of the National Treasure franchise opens up about the upcoming series. In an interview with Collider, Smith, who plays FBI Agent Ross, reveals each episode of Edge of History will be like a mini-movie. Smith says she's excited for fans of the franchise to see how the series expands the National Treasure world and teases incredible action scenes. Check out Smith's comment below:

"I'm excited for people to see how much we've really expanded the world because if you liked the first two movies we're essentially giving you 10 mini-movies, so this still has the same spirit of that amazing action that you get from the movies. We deliver a huge set piece in every single episode, but because we have 10 hours we can give you the action but also really get into the character study of all these people."

National Treasure 2 Book of Secrets

Starring Olivera, Smith, Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Billie, National Treasure: Edge of History is expected to nod to the franchise and serves as a continuation of the films. At this time, it's unknown if Cage will make a cameo appearance in Edge of History as Ben Gates. However, fans will be treated to the return of Riley Poole (Bartha) and Peter Sadusky (Harvey Keitel) in the upcoming series.

Helmed by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, National Treasure: Edge of History has yet to announce a release date. Edge of History is off to a great start by placing Jess and her unique cultural background at the center of the saga and opening up the franchise to a new generation of viewers. Slated for ten episodes, Edge of History season 1 could offer a fresh batch of family history, lost artifacts, and treasure-hunting for National Treasure enthusiasts. And if Smith's comments about each episode including a huge action set piece prove true, then National Treasure: Edge of History can fill that treasure-hunting void and be a worthy successor to the films.
