New posters for the upcoming National Treasure: Edge Of History series include a secret message. Developed by Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, the Disney+ show will follow a new group of explorers, led by Jess Valenzuela (played by Lisette Olivera). With the help of returning character Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), Jess is on the hunt for three mystery boxes. However, she isn't the only one, as the clues in those boxes are key to finding a lost treasure that Jess learned about from her dad when she was younger. Now, ahead of its December 14 premiere, the National Treasure account on Twitter shared some creative new character posters. Those posters highlight Olivera as Jess, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Billie Pearce, Zuri Reed as Tasha Rivers, Jake Austin Walker as Liam Sadusky, Jordan Rodrigues as Ethan, Antonio Cipriano as Oren, and Lyndon Smith in the role of Agent Ross. Each character comes with their own descriptor; for example, Jess is the "Truth Seeker". In those descriptors, certain letters are underlined. Taken together, those underlined letters spell out TRUSEERA — which also spells out TREASURE, if arranged differently. The posters are included below:
How National Treasure Show Connects To Nic Cage Movies
There has long been speculation about whether Nicolas Cage will appear in National Treasure: Edge of History, given his centrality to the franchise and his iconic status as a performer. That possibility is given a boost by the fact that the Disney+ show takes place in the same universe as the Cage films, opening the door for the actor to potentially reprise his role as historical treasure hunter Benjamin Gates. It's been confirmed that Bartha is not the only National Treasure star coming back for the Disney+ spinoff. Harvey Keitel will also be involved as FBI Agent Peter Sadusky.
However, for those hoping that Cage himself might also make a cameo, executive producer Marianne Wibberley noted at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con that Cage won't appear in National Treasure: Edge of History season 1 due to his schedule. Luckily, though, there will still be tokens of his presence throughout the show, such as the glasses previously owned by Benjamin Gates. They will allow for Edge of History to connect to the National Treasure movies in subtle ways while also carving its own path forward in the franchise.
If the spinoff proves to be a hit, Cage could potentially show up for future seasons of National Treasure: Edge of History. At the moment, the series has to walk the somewhat difficult rope of establishing the new protagonists while nonetheless incorporating the history that longtime viewers will be looking for. It's a tricky balance. However, based on the premise, the groundwork is in place for National Treasure: Edge of History to forge a strong connection to the films.
