A new piece of fan art imagines Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Namor the Sub-Mariner crossing paths with underwater counterparts Aquaman, King Shark, and the Deep. First created in 1939 by Bill Everett for Marvel Comics’ predecessor, Timely Comics, Namor was one of Timely’s most popular characters alongside Captain America. Considered to be Marvel’s first mutant, Namor is the son of a human sea captain and the princess of Atlantis, who possesses a range of powers owing to both his unique heritage and mutant abilities.
After months of Marvel Studios attempting to hide the character’s inclusion in the Black Panther sequel, it was finally revealed that Namor would be appearing in the film played by Narcos: Mexico’s Tenoch Huerta. However, rather than the King of Atlantis, Black Panther 2's Namor will instead be portrayed as the ruler of Talocan, a kingdom related to ancient Aztec mythology. Even Namor’s costume, revealed in the film’s recently released first trailer, teases a look directly connected to Mesoamerican culture. It is likely the impetus behind many of these changes are an attempt to help differentiate the character from Jason Momoa’s DC superhero Aquaman.
Now, fan artist rahalarts.eth has taken it upon themselves to imagine an underwater super team featuring Namor, Momoa’s Aquaman, King Shark from The Suicide Squad, and the Deep from Amazon’s The Boys. While many fans will be quick to point out the similarities between the MCU's Namor and the DCEU's Aquaman (and the Deep, who was created as a parody of both characters), the DC character is probably the better-known of the two sub-aquatic monarchs. Not only did Aquaman manage to secure his own live-action film appearance first, but his character has played a much larger role in more modern comic lore than Namor has. Surprisingly, however, it was Namor who was the first to rule Atlantis, having been created three years prior to his DC counterpart. Meanwhile, Nanaue, or King Shark, did not make his own comic debut until the 1990s.
However, it would seem that Marvel Studios are intent on taking the character in a new direction for his MCU debut. Not only has Ryan Coogler and the creative team behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever swapped Atlantis out for Talocan, but it is widely expected that Namor will serve as a villain in the film, which will see the Kingdoms of Wakanda and Talocan at war with one another. While audiences still have a number of months left to wait to see Namor on the big screen, fan art such as this will continue to tease his imminent arrival into the ever-unfolding Marvel Cinematic Universe.
