Nintendo is adding N64 games to Nintendo Switch Online. It was revealed during the September 2021 Nintendo Direct that Nintendo Switch Online is receiving a paid tier, called the Expansion Pack. This will add N64 and Sega Genesis games to the service, but there are some games that will likely never appear on the service.

The Expansion Pack will feature a killers row of N64 games at launch, including Mario Kart 64Super Mario 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The service will also be adding amazing games further down the line, including Banjo & Kazooie, F-Zero X, and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

The Expansion Pack will be loaded with great games, but there are some classics that have issues preventing them from appearing. These range from old legal issues, problems with rights holders, and the existence of modern remasters that are currently on sale on the Nintendo eShop. Because of these problems, it's unlikely the following N64 games will appear on Nintendo Switch Online's new service.

The Original Mario Party On N64 Is A Health Hazard

The original entry in the Mario Party series had a serious issue, as it caused players to develop blisters on their hands. This was due to all of the mini-games that required the player to spin the analog stick, which many people did with their palms. The game received a number of complaints, resulting in Nintendo needing to issue gloves. If Nintendo was going to put a Mario Party game on the Expansion Pack, then it would either be the second or third entries in the series, as they were also released on the N64.

N64's GoldenEye 007 Has Rights Issues

GoldenEye 007 was easily one of the most popular games on the N64, yet it has never been re-released on any platform. Nintendo has developer Rare on board for the Expansion Pack, which is why Banjo-Kazooie is coming to the service in the future. There is more to consider with GoldenEye 007, as it's a movie-licensed game, which includes likenesses of different actors. A planned Goldeneye 007 remake for Xbox Live was canned partway through development and the reason was due to the problems with the rights holders of the James Bond movie license, which will likely prevent GoldenEye 007 from appearing in the Expansion Pack for Nintendo Switch Online.

Some N64 Games Are Available On Switch Now In Remastered Forms

Turok the Dinosaur Hunter

There are some classic N64 games that likely won't appear in the Expansion Pack, because they're already available in a remastered form. The original Turok: Dinosaur HunterTurok 2: Seeds of Evil, and Doom 64 are all available for purchase on the system. Bethesda recently released a remastered version of Quake on different platforms, which includes the levels from Quake 64. These games won't be appearing on the Expansion Pack, so long as people are still buying their upgraded versions on the eShop.
