Warning: This story contains spoilers for the Mythic Quest season 2 finale.

Mythic Quest star David Hornsby says season 3 might include new character team-ups if it happens. Apple TV+'s scintillating workplace comedy Mythic Quest is created by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia veterans Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz. It revolves around the video game studio that produces the eponymous, hot MMORPG, and its unlikely mix of employees. McElhenney also stars in the show as its lead, Ian Grimm, the studio's vain game creator and developer. Meanwhile, Thor: Ragnarok actress Charlotte Nicdao toplines as Poppy Li, Mythic Quest's lead engineer and, now, co-creative director, who frequently locks horns with Ian. Throughout its run, Mythic Quest has been praised by both critics and fans, with many also complimenting its authentic exploration of the gaming industry.

In its June 25 episode, Mythic Quest wrapped up its second season on an explosive note. First, the game testers Rachel (Ashley Burch) and Dana (Imani Hakim) leave MQ to pursue their careers in different directions, and later the scheming Head of Monetization Brad Bakshi (Danny Pudi) gets arrested for insider trading after he takes the fall for his assistant Jo (Jessie Ennis). Meanwhile, Ian and Poppy realize that their work at MQ is mostly done, hence they also quit the game to work on an idea that Poppy had originally conceived as an extension for MQ. A heartbroken David (David Hornsby) stays behind, although he is reunited with Jo who rejoins him as his assistant, presumably intending to exploit his powerlessness. To sum up, the season 2 finale altered the character dynamics on the show by enormous proportions, thereby opening the door for a potential third season to explore new matchups.

Recently, during a conversation with Forbes, Hornsby revealed his expectations for Mythic Quest's possible season 3. He acknowledged that after the season 2 finale, the show is very well set to foray into uncharted territory.  But while there is the promise of a new adventure, the characters' hilarious hijinks shall remain intact. Hornsby said that Mythic Quest has switched up its character combinations before, so season 3 will probably continue this tradition of showcasing new pairings. However, at the same time, some original matchups will also resurface to provide comedic relief.

“I think the characters can’t really get away from themselves too much. As much as they'd like to think that there’s gonna be a new and fresh start, I think on our show we want to push the ball forward and see, ‘Yeah, let’s put them into some new territory.’ Just like we’re doing this season with new pairings. But at the end of the day, they’re still who they are and so, I think we’ll [have] some new paired with some old.”

Over its two-season run, Mythic Quest has frequently toyed with the teaming between its characters. In season 1, Jo and David mostly shared screen-space together. But in season 2, David was all by himself as Jo left him to work under Brad. As for Dana and Rachel, they remained together in their testers' room in season 2 but their interactions with their co-workers were also on full display, as they occasionally partnered with Ian, Poppy, and C.W. (F. Murray Abraham ) out of professional ambitions. C.W. himself had his entire backstory fleshed out, where his relationship with veteran writers A. E. Goldsmith (Shelley Hennig) and Peter Cromwell (Michael Cassidy & William Hurt) was explored. He also had an unlikely matchup with Jo in season 2, an association that will likely continue to play out in season 3 as well.

At the moment, there is no word on if and when Mythic Quest season 3 will happen, but the season 2 finale has left the door wide open for the characters to mingle differently and undertake new journeys. For now, MQ's chaotic and quirky staff has split up. So if there is a new iteration, it will have to prioritise getting the main characters back together, and there is definitely more than one way the show can go about doing that. There have always been teams and pairs on Mythic Quest, but the characters are all largely in a collective symbiosis. The antics of one impact the arc of another, and this comedic mutualism is one of the selling points of the show. Obviously, it is too early to tell who will be paired with whom if Mythic Quest gets a season 3. But no matter what the matchups look like, they will ultimately help loop in all the characters together, thus reuniting the separated MQ family.
