Murder By Death (1976) - Rent on Amazon Prime

Detective Sam Diamond pointing a gun at his dinner host in the parody film Murder by Death

In this spoof on murder mysteries which had experienced a popularity boost in the '70s, Murder by Death stars a who's who of '70s glitterati. Truman Capote, the infamous author who was a fixture at Studio 54, is even in the movie. Certain things about this film have not aged well...at all. This is especially the case for Peter Seller's detective character in the film.

Nevertheless, if you watch the film keeping in mind the movie's age and the time in which it was made, Murder By Death is a notable parody of the vaulted mystery genre. The plot surrounds a castle dinner party where each guest is a well-known sleuth. When the group is tasked with solving a murder mystery game for the prize of $1 million, all are jazzed for the opportunity. That is until the host's butler is actually murdered and the guests are trapped in the cavernous castle.

The Mirror Crack'd (1980) - Stream on Britbox

Lola and Marina at a party in The Mirror Crack'd

Starring screen siren Elizabeth Taylor among an abundance of '50s movie stars including Tony Curtis, Kim Novak, and Rock Hudson, The Mirror Crack'd is one of Agatha Christie's most underrated film adaptions as it is often left off best Agatha Christie movie adaptations lists.

However, this film is deserving of recognition for its acting lineup, the costumes (especially of Taylor in her violet, flower bejeweled ensemble), and the main plot twist. Also, the film's banter between the Hollywood divas played by Liz Taylor and Kim Novak is so deliciously campy and snarky, it may be hard to resist quoting some of their epic jabs after watching this oft-forgotten film.

Brick (2006) - Stream on Tubi TV

Brendan leaning against a car in Brick

Combining high school politics with neo-noir, Brick is a great whodunit. The plot revolves around teenager Brendan who takes it upon himself to find the killer of his ex-girlfriend. In order to nab the murderer, Brendan must navigate through school cliques and underworld types, encountering danger along the way.

The film is suspenseful and complex, a perfect combination for a fantastic mystery film. Brick would not be the last whodunit for director Rian Johnson, as he later made the acclaimed Knives Out.

Deathtrap (1982) - Rent On Amazon Prime

Sidnet talking to Clifford and Myra in Deathtrap

Starring the late Christopher Reeve and legendary British actor Michael Caine, this twisty tale of murder is a great complement to the mystery genre.  Twists abound in this mystery from exalted director Sidney Lumet, making for an unpredictable experience. Deathtrap covers the story of a has-been playwright (played by Caine) who plans to kill his gifted former pupil (Reeve) and steal the student's promising script.

The film keeps the audience on their toes while throwing in some comedy, culminating in an enjoyable and zigzagging watch. Deathtrap is an obscure whodunit that murder mystery fans need to see.

Last of Sheila (1973) - Stream on TCM

A film star-studded with acclaimed actors of the '70s, this murder mystery has the gorgeous locations of the French Riviera on its side. Starring the likes of James Mason, Raquel Welch, Ian McShane, James Coburn, Dyan Cannon, Richard Benjamin, and Joan Hackett, many of these stars may not be known by the younger audiences of today but the acting is exceptional in the film and worth a watch.

The film follows a powerful producer who aims to solve who murdered his wife in a hit and run the preceding year by having the suspects play a mysterious game on his yacht.

Knives Out (2019) - Stream on Amazon Prime

Benoit Blanc sitting in front of the wall of knives in Knives Out

A revitalization of the whodunnit for the 21st century, Knives Out tells the story of the murdered patriarch of the wealthy but dysfunctional Thrombey family and the quest to find the killer. Like many of the popular murder mysteries of the 20th century, Knives Out has an impressive cast consisting of Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette, and Ana De Armas.

The film is a more traditional take on the murder mystery than Rian Johnson's previous mystery Brick, but Knives Out is updated to fit the tastes of modern audiences. The love for this film is so strong that many have claimed this film as the best murder mystery movie.

Clue (1985) - Stream on Paramount+

The guests together in the 1985 movie Clue

In this comedy-mystery classic, Clue is based on the board game of the same name. In the wrong hands, the concept could have been a cheesy, cash grab. Instead, the film is a genuinely funny and puzzling mystery. It also has a unique concept for its ending.

Clue has three endings, with the first two being possible endings while the third and final conclusion is the definitive solving of the mystery. This distinctive technique sets this film apart from typical whodunits, making it a special and notable murder mystery deserving of a sequel.

Chinatown (1974) - Stream on Netflix

Jake looking at Evelyn in Chinatown

In this Los Angeles noir classic, Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway star in this tale of intrigue and corruption in the 1930s. Nicholson plays private investigator J.J Gittes, who is hired by Faye Dunaway's Evelyn Mulwray to follow her husband, the chief engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

From there, a winding mess of turmoil ensues. Using the traditional filming methods of '30s noirs, such as the careful use of shadow, but keeping the cynicism inherent of the '70s, Chinatown rightfully earned its spot as the second entry in the American Film Insitute's 10 Best Mystery Films.

From the likes of the respected Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Jaqueline Bisset, as well as other heavy hitters of the acting profession, the film sports top-notch acting.

In the same vein as Death on the Nile, as this was the preceding film in its series, this movie takes place on a train rather than the boat setting from the former film. Murder On the Orient Express immerses the viewer in the story, involving the spectator in each discovery of a clue. Once the guilty party is honed in on, the audience feels completely engaged in the unfolding action.
