Watch Jake Gyllenhaal suit up as Mysterio from Spider-Man: Far From Home in a new time-lapse video posted by the actor himself. Picking up from the emotional conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe returns with Tom Holland's second solo adventure as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, taking Peter Parker and his classmates on a globetrotting trip around Europe, complete with teenage crushes, fun sightseeing trips and huge elemental supervillains.
Spider-Man: Far From Home also marks the MCU debut of Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, and the movie's trailers have painted the character as a visitor from the Marvel Multiverse who seeks Peter Parker's help in saving the Earth. While the MCU's Mysterio appears to be a genuine hero on the surface, comic book readers will know that the figure is usually more villainous in nature, using trickery and deception to achieve his aims. While the loyalties of Gyllenhaal's Mysterio remain a mystery, one thing fans appear to be in general agreement about is how impressive the character's suit looks, especially the fish bowl helmet which could easily look out of place in live action.
Jake Gyllenhaal has now posted a new video to his Instagram account highlighting the process of transforming into Mysterio for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Set to an appropriately dramatic soundtrack, the time-lapse footage shows a small team of costume artists fixing Mysterio's breastplate and cape while the actor does his best not to interfere.
Proving that the "no capes" rule established by The Incredibles' Edna Mode still rings true today, fixing Mysterio's cape seems to be the most time consuming part of this process, with the shoulder attachments clearly requiring particular attention. Though the costume assembly may be somewhat convoluted, there's no doubt that the overall result ultimately proved highly effective, as Mysterio continues to garner a positive early reaction from fans and critics following Spider-Man: Far From Home's release earlier this week.
Many an actor has spoken out regarding the perils and impracticality of superhero costumes, from Christian Bale's rigid Batsuit in Batman Begins to the hours of makeup and body painting sessions Dave Bautista had to sit through to become Guardians of the Galaxy's Drax. Featuring in Hollywood movies is undoubtedly a good gig, but spending hours upon hours preparing makeup and costumes is no actor's idea of fun. Gyllenhaal's process for Mysterio doesn't appear quite as arduous as his MCU colleague, but the costume does look fairly cumbersome and appears to require more than a little assembly to prepare for shooting in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
