Due to complaints from a small portion of the community, a modder has replaced Myst remake's CGI sequences with an upscaled version of the original game's Full Motion Video scenes. The Myst remake joined Game Pass earlier this month and saw generally favored scores and positive reception from its fanbase. However, it did receive some criticism over its new CGI sequences, as players argued that the CG characters were not up to modern professional standards, even for an indie title. Luckily, a modder has swooped in and made the proper replacements to give the title its original charm.

Myst remake is a complete rebuild of the popular point-and-click adventure game from the early 1990s in Unreal Engine. Redefining the original game, it adds new visuals, sound effects, interactive elements, a new mode that randomizes the game's puzzles, and a reimagined plot for modern standards. Originally released exclusively on Oculus VR last year, Myst remake features VR and therefore several options for the feature. New modes such as "Free Roam" and "Teleport" have been added to easily mandate the immersive new island, along with a "comfort level" which allows players to easily enable snap or smooth turning when prompting in-game actions. Being completely rebuilt, players have noticed one thing out of touch however, it's original FMV scenes.

As explained in a discussion post on Steam, reported by PC Gamer, players were given a quick tutorial by a modder named "MrCoderWhite" on how to install and replace Myst remake's CGI sequences with the original game's FMV scenes. Due to the change of the game's plot, not every CGI model could be replaced, however, as the videos weren't able to sync 100%. Even with these limitations, players thanked the modder for their "amazing work" and the developers of Myst pinned the post to the discussion board, stating that they were happy to support someone's work on the title and to enjoy.

Myst Graphics Mod

Depending on how you count them, Myst has been given three or four similar remakes of the original game in the past. Following with the 2000 update in the Masterpiece Edition, 2000's realMyst and the Unity-powered realMyst: Masterpiece Edition released in 2014, all of which included the original FMV cutscenes. Given the previous re-releases, this could easily explain why the developers wanted to implement new CG characters instead of reusing FMV cutscenes from the 90s, especially for a game built from the ground up.

Almost 30 years after its original release, Myst's legacy continues with a remake and continued mod support from the community. Though different from the original, resonating players can finally return to the mystic island of Myst, completely with overhauled visuals, first-person mode, and if itching for nostalgia, the original game's FMV cutscenes.
