Amazon is reportedly considering a sequel to Dave Bautista's My Spy. The family-friendly comedy follows recently demoted CIA agent JJ (Bautista) as he gets assigned to watch over and gain information on a family suspected of holding valuable information. When the daughter, nine-year-old Sophie (Chloe Coleman), finds JJ's surveillance equipment, she blackmails him into teaching her various spy methods. My Spy was supposed to be released last year, but it ended up being delayed to January of this year. It was then delayed two additional times before settling on an April release date.

Of course, the coronavirus pandemic would prove to be another issue for My Spy to overcome, and STX ended up pulling it from its April release date when movie theaters across the globe closed down. My Spy soon became one of the many films to scrap theatrical releases and switch to streaming amid the pandemic, with Amazon purchasing the film for release on Prime. My Spy debuted on the service in June to mixed reviews, and Amazon hasn't released any sort of figures to indicate how well the film performed.

However, this news can help fill in some blanks. According to Deadline, STX is interested in developing a My Spy 2 as a result of the first film's excellent showing on Amazon. This potential sequel would see the returns of Bautista and Coleman, as well as director Peter Segal. It's still in the very early stages, so no deals have been put in place just yet. Additionally, Amazon is interested in debuting My Spy 2 on its platform because of the apparent success of the first installment, though again, that isn't a done deal just yet.

Clearly, My Spy proved to be a hit for Amazon, otherwise this sequel talk wouldn't be happening. Odds are, families were eager to have some fresh entertainment during their quarantines, and My Spy provided exactly what they were looking for. This further demonstrates how pivotal streaming has been for audiences in the past few months, and it's another example of a premium streaming debut that turned out positively. While it's unclear as to how well My Spy would have performed in theaters, it might be safe to say that being on Amazon gave it a better chance to succeed.

If My Spy 2 actually comes to fruition and goes to Amazon, this will give the streamer its first film franchise. Competitor Netflix has already amassed more than a few franchise-starters with Bright, Extraction, and potentially The Old Guardbut this would be a big milestone for Amazon. With things still in the early stages, it might be a while before a My Spy sequel actually gets moving, but clearly there's interest among the powers that be.
