Yahoo has debuted the first trailer for the new suspense horror/thriller My Soul To Take, from horror legend Wes Craven. It has been a long time since Craven wrote a movie that he also directed (the last one was New Nightmare back in 1994) but that all changes with this new slasher-fest.
We reported on My Soul To Take last December with [SPOILER ALERT] an unofficial behind-the-scenes picture revealing the film's killer. Half of you will want to check that out if you missed it, while the other half (myself included) will want to remained unspoiled.
The plot for the film isn't exactly the most original premise in the world, but it's a basic container for the kind of slasher antics that Craven is known and loved for. Here's the teasing plot synopsis:
In the sleepy town of Riverton, legend tells of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead? Only one of the kids knows the answer…
Now that you have a better idea what the film is about, check out the first trailer below:
As a bonus, here's the new one-sheet poster and some images from the movie:

Some hammy acting and clichés aside, I think this looks like a pretty effective slasher film. Despite Wes Craven not having done a heck of a lot this past decade, having his name above the title won't exactly hurt the film's exposure, as there are a lot of people who fondly remember his horror classics A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream.
I know there are a lot of you who probably groaned when you that My Soul To Take is being released in 3D, but are you really surprised? It's gotten to the point where its news if a movie is NOT in 3D, and a slasher film (with weapons being swung about and hands lunging out of nowhere) is a prime candidate to take things into the third dimension. I'm not saying it's a good thing but just that it's not in any way surprising.
I'm not the world's biggest horror fan and the slasher sub-genre is one I find particularly lacking in creativity a lot of the time. For every good slasher film there is there's two that are bad. But if anyone's going to come along and deliver one of the good ones again it's Craven.
My Soul To Take slashes its way into theaters on October 8th, 2010. If you're not interested in seeing it and want something a little more familiar then you can look forward to Craven's next written/directed film, Scream 4, which opens on April 15th, 2011.
