Though there are some Netflix original series that don’t live up to their hype, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is far from one of them. In Netflix’s quest to seemingly snap up every bit of talent they can get their hands on, the streaming platform offered exactly that to David Letterman, the biggest platform he could possibly have.

Letterman gets to choose his own guests for the series, and they aren't there to promote their latest movie, as was the case on The Late Show With David Letterman. Instead, he and the interviewees tackle much deeper subjects. From former U.S. presidents and human rights activists to the occasional movie star, there are so many incredible long-form interviews in the series.

“You Be The Newsman, I’ll Be Liz Taylor” - 7.7

George Clooney and David Letterman laugh on stage on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

The second episode of the show featured a guest with less international prestige than the first episode’s Barack Obama, but he’s probably just as well known. With guest George Clooney, My Next Guest was more like a late-night TV talk show than the first time around.

The modest Clooney talked about his human rights activist wife, Amal Clooney, just as much he talked about himself, but there was still plenty of time for him to talk about his iconic performances, along with his upbringing in Kentucky.

Howard Stern - 7.7

Howard Stern and David Letterman speak on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

Closing out the short first season of the series, Letterman interviewed Howard Stern. He talks about the time he interviewed Donald Trump, which should have been hilariously descriptive from Stern, and he normally wouldn't have held back.

But even though Stern tends to be outspoken, which is why many people love him, both he and Letterman were careful to keep the episode fairly PG, and it left a lot to be desired from fans. However, watching the two ratings gurus go head to head is just entertaining and juicy enough.

“You Know, She Has A Nobel Prize” - 7.9

Malala Yousafzai and David Letterman speak on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

This is the first episode on the list in which Letterman used the platform to interview someone truly sensational and inspiring - someone who has made a major difference in the world. Malala Yousafzai isn’t a movie star or a rapper, but a Nobel Prize-winning activist that was shot by the Taliban in her younger years.

Letterman uses the hour to pick her brain, and it’s unsurprisingly very insightful. And it’s classic Letterman when he can’t help but joke by asking her menial questions like, “Mets or Yankees?”

“I Had A Paper Route Too” - 7.9

Jay Z and David Letterman speak on stage on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

Though there’s a fascinating scene in this episode where Letterman visits super-producer Rick Rubin’s studio, and the two bearded men discuss Rubin's influence on music, there isn’t much in this episode in the way of inquisitive, fly-on-the-wall in-studio stories.

However, what the episode lacks in juicy music gossip, it more than makes up for with all of Jay-Z’s stories about his upbringing. The rapper is an incredible interview subject, as he is so responsive and goes into great detail without hiding the rough edges.

“You’re David Letterman, You Idiot” - 8.0

Jerry Seinfeld sits on stage with David Letterman on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

“You’re David Letterman, You Idiot” is a special behind-the-scenes episode of the series that came after season 1 had ended. In the episode, Letterman is less of an interviewer and more of an interviewee, as the host is discussing the influence he has had as a talk show host with none other than Jerry Seinfeld.

Seinfeld and Letterman were at the height of their powers around the same time, and they crossed paths on so many occasions that it only makes sense that it’d be the sitcom star to interview him. There’s more camaraderie between the two of them than any other guest, and it’s one of the best Seinfeld projects since Seinfeld ended.

Lewis Hamilton - 8.3

Lewis Hamilton drives Letterman around in a station wagon on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

When interviewing the world champion Formula One driver, Letterman digs into Lewis Hamilton’s humble beginnings, and it’s one of the best interviews the host has ever done.

However, the reason this episode is rated so highly is because fans get to see Letterman behind the wheel of a car with the racing driver. Though they might be in a measly station wagon instead of a Formula 1 car, Hamilton makes best possible use out of what the car has to offer, and Letterman has never looked so excited.

Ellen Degeneres - 8.4

Ellen and David Letterman meet outside on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

Letterman is arguably the best talk show host in the game, as he’s often proved that he’s prepared for anything. Whether it’s Joaquin Phoenix using his late-night show as performance art or a strange appearance from Harmony Korine just doing what Harmony Korine does best, there are few other talk show hosts that can handle it.

In this episode, Ellen Degeneres, who has one of the longest-running talk shows of her own, goes head to head with Letterman, and it’s full of hilarious one-liners and gratifyingly detailed and mischievous behind the scenes stories.

“It’s A Whole New Ball Game Now” - 8.6

Barack Obama sits on stage with David Letterman on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

Almost the best episode of the series among fans of the show is the very first. Letterman arrived on Netflix with a bang with his first guest - the former President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Though My Next Guest didn’t feature on Obama’s list of favorite shows of 2020, Obama graced Letterman with his predictably charming self. It’s the most insightful interview Obama has given since his presidency ended, as he discussed current tensions in the political sphere, and given the political climate of the time, many fans were happy to hear a politician speak with intelligence and class.

Dave Chappelle - 8.9

Dave Chappelle Asks David Letterman If He Smokes Weed In My Next Guest Trailer

Dave Chappelle is something of a host himself, and an incredible one at that, as he even won an Emmy for hosting SNL, but this time he’s being interviewed by the former late-night host, and as always, he’s effortlessly funny.

But what makes this episode of the series so special is that, unlike the other comedians that have appeared on the show with Letterman, it isn’t just about competing for who has the best joke. Chappelle has genuinely insightful things to say. Whether it’s culture, politics, or history, Chappelle’s hour with Letterman was just as intelligent as any of the activists who have appeared on the show.

Shah Rukh Khan - 9.1

Shah Rukh Khan laughs on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

Being another special episode that was uploaded on to the streaming platform a few days after the rest of season 3, Shah Rukh Khan is undoubtedly the best episode, and maybe the best interview that Letterman has ever conducted.

Shah Rukh Khan is not only the world’s biggest Bollywood star, but he is one of the most earnest, confident, and smartest human beings on the planet. The love he has for his country and culture is so heartwarming and he talks about it a lot in the episode. And he can also match Letterman’s wit, punch for punch, making this episode a truly enjoyable watch.
