My Name season 2 could be coming to Netflix very soon – here’s what we know about how the second season could play out. The story of the Netflix crime drama My Name revolves around Ji-woo (Han So-hee), who is hunting for the killer of her father Dong-hoon, and who, in the process, gets embroiled in the criminal underworld of South Korea’s street gangs. Ji-woo gets recruited into a gang by Mu-jin, who was Dong-hoon’s friend, and Ji-woo eventually unravels a criminal conspiracy that changes everything she knows about her dad. Following the success of survival K-drama Squid Game, My Name has also joined Netflix’s list of top ten most popular series.

However, unlike Squid Game, the ending of My Name leaves no mysteries for audiences to ponder. It’s revealed that Dong-hoon was an undercover narcotics police agent who’s real name is Joon-su, who only assumed the identity of Dong-hoon in order to infiltrate the Dongcheon organization. Moreover, it’s revealed that Mu-jin, the head of Dongcheon, who trained Ji-woo and welcomed her into the gang, is actually her father’s killer. During the finale of My Name, Ji-woo kills Mu-jin for lying to her and manipulating her, and Ji-woo continues to evade narcotics police. Meanwhile, narcotics unit chief Gi-ho survives his assassination attempt, and is already recovering from his injuries.

My Name’s two surviving characters offer two different potential starting points for the second season. Despite how My Name season 1 expertly ties up all the loose ends, there are many ways to explore what happens to either Ji-woo or Gi-ho, with plenty of opportunities for creative violence and noir mystery – My Name’s bread and butter. However, it’s all up to Netflix whether or not the stories of these characters will continue in season 2.

How My Name Sets Up A Season 2 Story

After Ji-woo realizes that she’s been manipulated by Mu-jin into doing various criminal acts, Ji-woo could eventually turn herself in to the police. Ji-woo’s conscience won’t allow her to keep running from the law, especially after how Ji-woo’s romantic interest, police officer Pil-do, was killed by Mu-jin. Jin-woo’s violent skills will come in handy in prison, especially since she was a former cop who’s killed several high-profile gangsters. My Name side character Gi-ho could also step up in the second season’s story. Not only is Gi-ho still alive, but he could also be the person who brings Ji-woo to justice.

Moreover, there’s bound to be a wealth of evidence that can be found in the Dongcheon headquarters, which is now fully accessible to the narcotics unit thanks to how Ji-woo massacred the entire criminal organization. While this doesn’t absolve Ji-woo for her crimes, it could be enough of a foundation for Ji-woo to become Gi-ho’s prison insider as the narcotics chief unravels gang and narcotics-related evidence. After all, the two share a similarly deep connection to Joon-su, who died fighting these gangs. From this standpoint, My Name season 2 could also use flashbacks to reveal more about Choi Mujin’s origin story, how Joon-su the cop became Dong-hoon the gangster, and even why former side character Gi-ho decided to work for narcotics. While the My Name ending provided a satisfying, meaningful conclusion to the series’ neo-noir detective plot, there’s definitely room for a second season to build upon what the first has already established. Also, K-dramas tend to last for around 16 to 20 episodes on average. My Name season 1 ended after only 8 episodes, which could mean that what’s been revealed is only the first half of the story.

Could My Name Season 2 Happen?

Currently, the streaming giant Netflix is yet to make announcements about whether or not My Name will indeed be renewed for a second season. My Name is currently not included in the lineup of Netflix shows that will return for 2022. That being said, My Name was released on October 15, 2021, which means that it might be too early to tell whether or not the K-drama will continue. For now, it’s unclear whether or not My Name will be renewed by Netflix, let alone when its second season will come out. On the other hand, considering the success of My Name and how quickly the series made it to Netflix’s top ten, there's precedent to suggest that My Name season 2 could be on the way soon.

My Name Season 2 Cast: Who Could Return?

My Name season 1 left only a handful of key characters alive. Apart from former gangster/cop Ji-woo and narcotics unit chief Gi-ho, the other cops in narcotics could also step up for larger roles in the second season. This is especially true since Mu-jin killed Pil-do, who was a beloved and upstanding member of the narcotics unit. As Gi-ho digs through the evidence in Dongcheon headquarters in order to go after the city’s remaining gangs, some of the surviving cops could join Gi-ho in a new neo-noir story line. Meanwhile, the deaths of both Mu-jin and Gang-jae have created massive power vacuums in the Korean criminal underworld. Some of the minor gangsters earlier seen in the Dongcheon gang’s gym could also step up as new criminal leaders in season 2, which would give Gi-ho and his new team a worthy challenge. Moreover, some of these gangsters could also seek out Ji-woo to avenge Mu-jin, as the former Dongcheon leader obviously had very deep connections to the rest of the criminal underworld.

In any case, the only two key characters who are sure to return are Ji-woo and Gi-ho, mainly because they’re the only ones who actually survived My Name season 1. If My Name season 2 does push through, what’s likely to happen is that it will be filled by an almost all-new cast of characters. Considering how My Name’s violence has drawn comparisons to Tarantino’s bloodiest films (such as Kill Bill), season 2 is bound to get even more creative with its violence, which could possibly lead to even more experienced martial artists joining the new cast. As one of the few ultra-violent new K-dramas of 2021, My Name’s story is unique enough to garner a large following who are already clamoring for a second season, and Netflix is bound to answer these calls very soon.
