Warning: SPOILERS for chapter #379 of My Hero Academia. The true ultimate villain of My Hero Academia finally takes the stage, as Tomura Shigaraki frees himself of All For One's control and the original personality of Shigaraki gets ready to fight Deku to the death.

My Hero Academia has two main villains. One is Shigaraki Tomura, whose real name is actually Tenko Shimura. Tenko's deadly Quirk, Decay, awakened in a disastrous manner when he was a kid, killing his entire family. After that, Tenko was taken in by the other big villain of the series, All For One, who gave him his surname, Shigaraki, and the name Tomura, which means "mourning". All For One then began grooming Tomura as his successor and the new Symbol of Fear, hoping that his burning hatred against hero society could be used to finally steal One For All. However, All For One's real plan included giving his Quirk to Tomura, and use it to take over his body.

tomura gets his body back from all for one

Ever since Tomura was given the All For One Quirk he acquired incredible powers, but his personality was slowly overwritten by that of his master, who thus ended up inhabiting two bodies: the original All For One (Shigaraki) body, wounded and crippled by his battles against All Might, and Tomura's new body, enhanced through special Quirk surgery. However, chapter #379 of My Hero Academia confirms that Shigaraki's personality was not gone, and he actually gains back control of his body, pushing his master's vestige away. The real Tomura/Tenko who emerges is not less dangerous, and he still wants to destroy the world that he blames for his suffering.

According to Tomura's explanation, he was aware of All For One's plan all along. He hid the core of his personality inside his soul and, little by little, started reclaiming his body from the inside. Contrary to All For One, Tomura is not interested in the feud with One For All and doesn't care about stealing Deku's Quirk. This situation shows that Tomura will, in fact, be the final villain of the story. The original All For One has just rejuvenated himself using Eri's Rewind Quirk: but at a great cost: he will soon die and vanish forever. Clearly, All For One was counting on the fact that he was also inhabiting Tomura's body, but if that vestige of his personality has really been repelled forever, as soon as his original body dies for the aftereffects of the drug, All For One will be gone forever, leaving Tomura as the real, final villain of the series.

This is certainly an unexpected development for Kohei Horikoshi's manga, as All For One is the mastermind who pulled the strings of everything bad that happened to the heroes during the entire series. However, Shigaraki has a much deeper connection with the protagonist, Deku, and his tragic story is more relatable than All For One's grandiose aspiration of becoming the "Demon King", which ultimately gives a lot of credit to the decision of having Tomura Shigaraki as the true, final villain of My Hero Academia.
