My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is officially in the works. Penned by Nia Vardalos in her screenplay debut, the romantic comedy released in 2002 and quickly became a massive success. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, My Big Fat Greek Wedding put Vardalos’ comedy career on the map and became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time.

Directed by Joel Zwick, My Big Fat Greek Wedding follows Fotoula “Toula” Portoklas (Vardalos), a thirty-year-old Greek-American woman who lives a relatively monotonous life helping her boisterous, meddling family run the family’s restaurant, but desires to branch out. After attending college, undergoing a makeover, and becoming employed at a travel agency, Toula falls in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett), who is not Greek. Fans of the hit film were treated to a short-lived TV sequel series in 2003 titled, My Big Fat Greek Life, as well as a sequel film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, released in 2016, which focuses on Toula and Ian’s teenage daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), and another Greek Wedding. Now, it appears the romantic comedy is becoming a trilogy.

Vardalos took to her Instagram to reveal she has written a script for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 and confirmed, “Yes, it is true that for over a year we have been trying to film a script that I wrote called My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.” Explaining in the Instagram video that “the news leaked because one Greek found out,” Vardalos elaborated that filming has faced setbacks due to insurance. Currently, only studio films can receive insurance during the coronavirus pandemic, and the third installment is an independent film. Vardalos went on to reveal that once insured, they are “going to Greece to film.”

As it stands, fans can expect the stellar and lovable supporting cast to make a return, as Vardalos also said, “of course the entire cast is invited back.” Of course, Vardalos continues to keep plot details under wraps, but the news of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is exciting for fans who are eager to see what the Portokalos family is up to now. Vardalos appears adamant about remaining true to her roots, and the roots of the titular family, by eyeing Greece as the backdrop for the third film.

While My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 continues to remain in the production pipeline, Vardalos confirming the news on social media has drawn attention to the film and could help to get the insurance kinks ironed out sooner rather than later. Indeed, with the entire supporting cast expected to reprise their roles, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 could easily focus on the wedding of Paris, with Toula and Ian attempting to handle the family and the upcoming nuptials of their daughter. For now, it appears fans of the first two films have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.
