My 600-lb Life star Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, referred to by fans as "Dr. Now," is known for being the leading bariatric surgeon on the hit TLC reality show, and it's time to share information about the doctor. From his lack of patience with excuses, to his willingness to tackle the most difficult bariatric cases, Dr. Now has earned a great reputation with fans. They love his tenacity, endurance, and iconic quirks and mannerisms. Above all, though, the 77-year-old Iranian-American doctor is revered for the tough love that he gives to his rebellious patients. Most of them leave his office healthier and happier, if not particularly pleased with their demanding physician.

Dr. Nowzaradan is a medical doctor who is known to probe into the personal lives of his patients. For example, he sends them to psychologists, so they can discuss any traumas that may play a role in their unhealthy lifestyles. However, the reality network doesn't share much information about the doctor’s life. TLC’s infamous doctor was born in Tehran, Iran, and attended the University of Tehran, where he received his medical degree. Dr. Now currently lives in Houston, TX, where he works at many institutions, including University General Hospital, Renaissance Hospital, Surgery Specialty Hospital, First Street Hospital, and Doctors Hospital at Tidwell (Houston Obesity Surgery).

He is best known for pioneering the practice of laparoscopic surgery (a less invasive method of surgically accessing the abdomen), which is suitable for patients that were previously considered too heavy to operate on. The My 600-Lb Life doctor has written several books, including The Scale Does Not Lie, People Do (2019), diet manuals, and cookbooks. While he has been a practicing physician for decades, he only rose to fame when the My 600-Lb Life series began airing in 2012. Before that, he had been married to Delores McRedmond for 27 years, but they separated in 2002. The couple raised three children together, Jonathan (b. 1978), Jennifer (b. 1980), and Jessica (b. 1983). According to Thecelebsinfo, Jonathan, who first conceptualized the idea behind My 600-Lb Life, works as the director/executive producer of the show. He is also credited with directing a number of other reality shows featuring the weight loss journeys of morbidly obese patients. Jennifer is an art instructor at South Austin High School, and Jessica is an artist and photographer.

Endoscopy Staff Celebrate My 600-Lb Life's Dr. Now On National Doctors' Day

Dr. Now is renowned for exposing the less-than-glamorous lifestyles of his patients (such as the sisters featured in the spin-off, 1000-Lb Sisters), but he is quite private about his own personal life. He is no stranger to drama, having separated from former wife Delores on unpleasant terms. Divorce proceedings lasted two years, and weren't finalized until 2004. Delores, who left her secretarial job after marriage to raise their children, also cared for Dr. Now’s elderly mother, who lived with the couple for 21 years. The List reports that Delores’ grounds for divorce were filed in the District Court of Texas, and include accusations of “cruel treatment” and “insupportability.” The court ruled in her favor, saying that Dr. Now had "complicated the discovery process by withholding records, obstructing discovery, asserting baseless privileges, and failing to comply." Delores was awarded 70 percent of joint assets, although more details regarding the specific reasons for divorce are not public. While he sustained financial losses in the divorce, Dr. Now is still believed to be worth millions.

My 600-Lb Life's Dr. Now Promotes His New Book

Like Dr. Proctor from 1000-lb Sisters, Dr. Now is one of America’s most well-known bariatric surgeons. He's pioneered surgical and dietary interventions that have changed countless lives for the better. That doesn’t mean that the doctor’s own life has been free of strife and conflict. An immigrant who worked his way through the ranks in the American medical field, the physician has shown incredible strength in the face of adversity. His accomplishments, however, may have come at the expense of his personal life. The doctor seems to live by his own recommendations to his patients, and shows no signs of slowing down. Fans will likely see Dr. Now in many future My 600-lb Life seasons.
