Muze is an iOS messaging app that allows users to message each other in a freeform way that allows for creative self-expression. The app was released on Apple's App Store on August 18 and has, thus far, received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Mostly thanks to its unorthodox approach that many iPhone users view as a unique and interesting alternative to the messaging app competition.

Traditionally, messenger apps have a fairly uniform structure where messages come from the right part of the screen and the messages from others come from the left. These messages are all generally in bubbles or color-coded so that the messages can be differentiated by the sender. Images, stickers, emojis, videos, and GIFs can all be sent through messaging services, but they generally are sent in the same way as actual messages.

Muze throws all of that out the window with the app promoting how there are no rules or norms. Instead, the blank space for messages is more of a blank canvas that individuals can draw or write within. They can also place photos, change fonts, and build collages with ease. Muze’s App Store page emphasizes the lack of rules, allowing users to explore, discover, and use the space in any way imaginable. Besides having conversations with one other individual, the app also supports group chats.

The Reception to Muze Messaging (So Far)

So far, users are loving the app. Many remark that this is one of the first times they’ve felt they could be truly creative through a messaging app, or even on the internet as a whole. Others simply praise how genius it is. Muze offers intuitive conversations and collaborations without the bounds of traditional messaging. Users can even zoom in to make sure they’re able to see all the things their friends have created within the app.

It is also freeform in more ways than just its messaging. Users can customize their color themes for the app from nine choices, and there are five app icon choices currently available. The app is planning on adding more fonts, customizations, and features in the future. Though it’s newly released, many users have commented on how polished it is.

Muze offers something very unique. There are hundreds of messaging apps and online messengers, and they all fit within the same format and bounds. However, Muze has destroyed those boundaries and best of all, it’s free to use. Right now, the app is only available to iOS users, but it may become available on other operating systems in the future.
