Both adult and younger moviegoers should get a kick out of next year’s The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made, while kids make up the target audience for the upcoming 3D movie adaptation, The Smurfs.
Here’s a semi-official synopsis of the Muppet’s next cinematic venture (which looks to be titled The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made after all):
‘The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made’ is about Gary (Segel), Mary (Amy Adams), and Walter (a man, his girlfriend, and the man’s life-long nondescript, brown puppet best friend) getting the old Muppet gang – now retired entertainers known for the same Muppet show we know them from – together to save the TV studio that the original show was shot in. A villain, Tex Richman (Chris Cooper), bent on drilling for oil underneath the studio, is due to take over the studio in weeks, and the only way to stop him? Putting on a show that draws ten million viewers.
James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords) is directing the new Muppet movie, which was also co-written by Segel. It’s been eleven years since Jim Henson’s sock puppet-inspired creations last graced the big screen and we’re hoping this new pic features much of the same irreverent humor and comedy that the Muppets are so beloved for.

A teaser trailer for The Smurfs was released this past summer and it confirmed that, like this winter’s Yogi Bear, the CGI/live-action hybrid is strictly for the under-10 crowd who either never saw the original TV show or are easily entertained by a movie full of odd creatures getting into a variety of harmless hijinks and shenanigans, but not much else.
A Smurfs promo image is being used in an auction for VIP tickets to the film’s premiere (hey, it’s for charity) and it provides the first look at the feminine Smurfette, along with Papa Smurf, Brainy Smurf, and Grumpy Smurf (hint: he’s the pleasant looking fellow in the background).
