More Human Actors Ready to Join New Muppet Movie

Pixar Lends Helping Hand to New Muppet Movie

Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the rest of Jim Henson's original felt-made characters look to be joined by a handful of new humans (Jason Segel still counts, right?) in a new Untitled Muppet Movie.

We were with the impression that The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time was the official title of Walt Disney Pictures' new Muppet Movie, but the latest word from THR indicates that is not the case after all.

Segel and Nicholas Stoller (Get Him to the Greek) collaborated on the script for the Muppet's new cinematic venture, which finds the comedic creatures on a quest to reunite and put on a show in order to save a beloved film studio from being destroyed by a greedy entrepreneur. Flight of the Conchords co-creator James Bobin will direct the film, which will also feature Segel as the human lead.

Amy Adams - whose next onscreen appearance will be in this winter's The Fighter - now looks set to play Segel's girlfriend in the new Muppet movie. Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones play supporting roles in two critically-acclaimed films currently showing in theaters (The Town and The Social Network, respectively) and are lined up to play the greedy villain who wants to destroy the Muppet's old film studio and an ABX executive, in turn.

Previous Muppet movies have featured performances and cameos by a whole slew of famous names, including the likes of Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Charles Grodin, Joan Rivers, Michael Caine, Tim Curry, Quentin Tarantino, and many others. Segel and Stoller reportedly went so far as to write certain celebrity appearances into their Muppet movie script, so as to keep with that tradition.

Pixar is fine-tuning the screenplay for the new Muppet pic, which will hopefully contain much of the same irreverent humor that has long been a trademark of the titular characters - as their recent YouTube skits have proven, the Muppets still have a whole lot of fans who would like to see them and their "unique" approach to comedy up on the big screen again.

The Untitled Muppet Movie is tentatively scheduled for a theatrical release in the U.S on December 25th, 2011.
