Iconic horror director Rob Zombie is bringing The Munsters back to life in an updated reboot, and some new characters are coming along for the ride. There have been several attempts to replicate the success of the original Munsters series over the years, but all have fallen short. Since the reboot was announced in early 2021, there has been speculation over how closely Rob Zombie, who is known for his work in gore and horror, will follow the original series. The reboot is currently in production, and set photos released on Zombie's Instagram account have revealed that certain details have stayed true to the original Munsters series, while Zombie has taken creative liberties in changing other areas — namely, adding original characters to the cast.

The franchise began with The Munsters television series back in 1964. The series, which satirized American sitcoms of the time, follows a family of monsters as they make the move from Transylvania to the American suburbs. The family is comprised of two vampires, a Frankensteinian monster, a werewolf son, and one seemingly "normal" daughter, as they attempt to navigate suburban life while failing to realize they are not the average American family. While the series was beloved in syndication, it was originally canceled after only 70 episodes due to a drop in ratings caused by competition with ABC's Batman.

While Rob Zombie may be taking some liberties in adding new characters, there are other elements that the director is sticking true to. The crew has assembled an exact replica of 1313 Mockingbird Lane, the iconic site of the Munster Mansion, and Zombie's recreation of existing characters pays a strong homage to their source material. So far, Zombie has confirmed the return of three beloved characters: the family's patriarch, Herman Munster (Jeff Daniel Phillips), the family's matriarch and Herman's beloved wife, Lily Munster (Sheri Moon Zombie), and Lily's eccentric, undead father, Grandpa (Daniel Roebuck). Zombie has been posting a majority of his set photos in black and white as a callback to the original Munsters series, though it has yet to be confirmed whether or not the film itself will be shot in the same style.

Richard Brake As Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang

The Munsters Richard Brake as Dr. Wolfgang

Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang was one of the first indicators that Zombie didn't plan on making his reboot a carbon copy of the original Munsters series. Zombie made the announcement on his Instagram — where much of the movie's news has been announced — that Richard Brake would be portraying Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang, "Transylvania's most popular mad scientist." Currently, not much is known about this new doctor character —but, if the blood-covered image Zombie uploaded is any indicator, Dr. Wolfgang is sure to put the "mad" in "mad scientist."

Richard Brake is a character actor that is no stranger to working with director Rob Zombie, having previously appeared in films like 31 and 3 from Hell. On top of appearing in films like Doom, Brake has had guest roles in television series like The MandalorianGame of Thrones, and Supernaturalas well as voice acting in various video games.

Jorge Garcia As Floop

The Munsters Jorge Garcia as Floop

Floop is one of Zombie's most recent announcements regarding the Munsters cast. Floop, played by Jorge Garcia, is an entirely original character to Zombie's updated Munsters. Zombie revealed that Floop will serve as the "hunchback assistant" to Dr. Wolfgang and Herman Munster's best friend. Not much has been revealed about Floop at this point, though casting images shared on Zombie's Instagram hint that Floop's character could draw inspiration from Quasimodo, the protagonist of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Jorge Garcia is an American actor and comedian best known for playing Hugo Reyes in the ABC drama series Lost. However, Lost is far from the only project Garcia has under his belt. He had a nine-year run on CBS' crime drama Hawaii Five-0 playing Jerry Ortega, a conspiracy theorist that frequently assisted the Hawaii Five-0 Task Force. Garcia has also appeared in Adam Sandler's The Ridiculous Six and The Wedding Ringer.

Sylvester McCoy As Igor

The Munsters Sylvester McCoy as Igor

While Igor may not be an entirely new character, Zombie seems to be taking the character in a new direction. In the original Munsters, Igor was Grandpa Munster's friend and pet bat who lives in the lab underneath the Munster Mansion and spoke in a squeaky language only Grandpa can understand. In 1981, the film The Munsters' Revenge introduced a human character named Cousin Igor, who served as a caretaker for Castle Dracula. Zombie's Igor is indeed human and is described as a "loyal servant" to the Munsters by the director, appearing to be a composite character of both the original Igor and the 1981 reimagining of the character.

Zombie has cast a true acting icon to take on the role of Igor for the Munsters reboot. Sylvester McCoy has been acting since the 1960s, taking on career-defining roles like the Seventh Doctor in BBC's Doctor Who and Radagast the Brown in the Hobbit trilogy. On top of these iconic performances, McCoy can be found in movies like King Lear and various short films. McCoy was also a frequent staple of British theatre.

Catherine Schell As Zoya Krupp

The Munsters Catherine Schell as Zoya Krupp

Of the new characters, Zoya Krupp has had the least amount of information released so far. Zombie announced the character on his Instagram in early January, though the director offered little in regards to character information. The image Zombie released of Zoya Krupp on set gives off the impression of a Roma witch, clad in flowing fabrics and a plethora of golden jewelry. With the Munster family originating from the Transylvania region of Romania, it would certainly be plausible for them to have befriended a Roma witch along the way. Currently, only time will tell what role Zoya Krupp will play in the Munsters reboot.

One thing we do know about Zoya Krupp is who has been cast to play her. Acting icon Catherine Schell is stepping out of retirement to take on the role of Zoya Krupp in Rob Zombie's The Munsters. Before her retirement in the 90s, Schell was best known for portraying a Bond Girl in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, as well as her appearances as Countess Scarlioni alongside the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) on Doctor Who and the sci-fi movie Space:1999. Schell is also known for starring alongside actor Peter Sellers in The Return of the Pink Panther and The Prisoner of Zenda.
