Director Rob Zombie shares a BTS look at Grandpa Munster in his new reboot of The Munsters. Al Lewis played the over-the-hill Count Dracula in the original CBS TV show, which ran from 1964 to 1966.

Lewis undoubtedly would have been happy to once again play Grandpa Munster in Zombie’s upcoming reboot – given that he spent most of his life carting out the character whenever he was asked – but unfortunately the actor passed away in 2006. Now Grandpa’s Dracula cape passes to Daniel Roebuck, who stars in Zombie’s Munsters reboot alongside Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman and Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily. Zombie himself also recently revealed a new Munsters character, a Transylvanian mad scientist played by Richard Brake.

As The Munsters continues to come together, Zombie just shared a new BTS image showing Roebuck as Grandpa. The actor indeed has that classic Dracula thing going as he, according to Zombie, is fitted for his custom coffin. The only non-traditional Dracula accessory is of course the mask, which features the spooky Munsters logo. See the image in the space below:

Details are being kept largely under wraps about Zombie’s take on The Munsters. However, there has been speculation that the movie could be shot in black-and-white, given that so many of Zombie’s teases have been in monochrome. That of course would be in keeping with the original Munsters TV show, but would be more than a bit of a risk at a time when black-and-white is mostly the domain of art filmmakers who can get away with making extreme aesthetic choices. Even if The Munsters does end up arriving in color, Zombie no doubt will find many creative ways to tie the film back to his monster movie influences, particularly the Universal monsters of the 1930s (who obviously inspired the original Munsters, including Grandpa, a direct homage to Bela Lugosi’s well-dressed movie Dracula).

It remains to be seen how Zombie will ultimately mix things up with his version of The Munsters, but as a filmmaker he’s not exactly known for subtlety, so it’s likely his take on the classic TV show will be wilder and more extreme than many are prepared for. But even if Zombie takes things in a darker and more over-the-top direction with The Munsters, he’ll still have the classic characters like Grandpa to play around with, and make points about living as a “monster” in a world full of otherwise normal people. The Munsters is set to arrive in theaters and on Peacock in the Fall of 2022.
