Brendan Fraser says it would be fun to reunite with Michelle Yeoh for The Mummy 4. Fraser shot to action-movie stardom with his role in 1999’s hit film The Mummy. Later he returned for a pair of sequels, including 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, which co-starred Everything Everywhere All At Once legend Yeoh.Given how high Fraser is now riding thanks to his Oscar nomination for The Whale, it’s no surprise that the call is getting louder for The Mummy to finally get another sequel.
For his part, Fraser seems amenable to making The Mummy 4. Asked during an appearance on The Awardist podcast (via EW) about the possibility of him and fellow current Oscar-nominee Yeoh re-teaming for another Mummy, Fraser expressed nothing but enthusiasm. “Sounds like fun. I’m always looking for a job. If anyone’s got the right conceit. I think I’ve never been as famous, and never been as unsalaried at the moment as I am right now. So spread the word.”
Will The Mummy 4 Ever Happen
There was interestingly enough once an idea for The Mummy 4 on the table at Universal. Entitled The Mummy: Rise of the Aztec, the film would have seen Antonio Banderas joining the franchise as the villain alongside Fraser’s returning character. But plans for the film were dropped once Universal pivoted to their Dark Universe concept, which saw The Mummy being rebooted with Tom Cruise in the lead. But the Cruise-led Mummy became a notorious flop and the Dark Universe was scrapped, leaving the door wide open on new Mummy concepts to arise.
That Universal was once so gung-ho the make The Mummy a centerpiece of its Dark Universe proves that the studio believes there’s value in the IP, so it seems likely they’ll take another stab at the property in the future. Now would indeed seem to be a perfect time to take that stab given how hot Fraser is, and how much fans seem to want The Mummy 4 to happen. But as Fraser himself pointed out in his new comments, someone has to come up with the right “conceit” for another Mummy to make sense.
It’s hard to say what exactly the right premise would be for The Mummy 4, beyond making sure that it’s nothing like the Cruise-led Mummy. Bringing back Yeoh would obviously give the film another infusion of star power, though explanations would have to be arranged for how Yeoh’s character could come back after dying in The Mummy 3. As of now, it seems Fraser is down for The Mummy 4, so perhaps it’s time to ask Yeoh and see if a reunion is really possible.
