As the next competitor in the platform fighter genre has started its open beta, many players of MultiVersus are asking if will it stay free to play. With many multiplayer-only games either transitioning to free-to-play or launching as free-to-play, it is an understandable question. As more games come out and business models evolve, game studios are constantly competing for not just money, but the attention of consumers. This makes it crucial to the success of games to find a balance between profit and player happiness, with titles like Fortnite a key example. MultiVersus, with its mix of Warner Bros. characters and cosmetics, looks to be following in that trend.

MultiVersus is the new platform fighter game developed by Player First Games and is already being praised as a true Smash Bros. competitor. The game is filled with a roster of characters that fall under the Warner Bros. umbrella of franchises that range from the DC Universe and Scooby-Doo to Adventure Time, Looney Tunes, and more. While MultiVersus offers the usual free for all and one on one battles other platform fighters have, a new game mode in two versus two brings a need for teamwork as well as synergy between characters.

MultiVersus has launched in open beta as a free-to-play title, but it's understandable as to why some may question if it'll stay that way. Player First Games seems to have settled any doubts over that however, as the official answer by the studio written on the MultiVersus FAQ reads "MultiVersus is a free-to-play game with optional in-game purchases". While the game will release free-to-play, it also has three levels of a Founders Pack that can be purchased. Each one offers rewards of varying levels like character tickets (which are used to unlock characters), cosmetics like banners or ring-out effects, the premium in-game currency Gleamium, and premium battle passes. The latter of course has risen to incredible usage and success over the past few years in gaming.

MultiVersus Is A Free-To-Play Game With Microtransactions

Currently, the microtransactions are expected to be similar to what can be found in the Founders Packs, while also being able to buy character skins and emotes. A recent leak for MultiVersus has teased Space Jam uniforms, and more cosmetic updates are expected to follow. While there has been criticism over how costly some of these cosmetics are, many players are praising the game for not allowing any in-game purchases to give a competitive advantage.

Overall the initial response to MultiVersus has been a positive one, as the game combines fun gameplay with new twists and beloved characters from a variety of franchises. While the game seems certain to remain free-to-play, how the microtransactions and future updates go will be a huge factor in the longevity of the game. If Player First Games can find a healthy balance between compelling gameplay/updates and profitable microtransactions, MultiVersus could rise up the ranks as one of the best free-to-play games in the market.
