MultiVersus boasts a fun and diverse cast of playable characters, and players can get a few without any grinding for money in the game's new Open Beta. The new MultiVersus Open Beta phase is currently in Early Access, with players earning access by either watching an hour of Twitch streams of MultiVersus or purchasing the game's Founder's Pack. However, MultiVersus' open beta is essentially a soft launch, meaning that these free characters and others that players purchase will permanently be in their playable cast of characters.

Since its initial tech tests earlier in 2022, MultiVersus has been steadily gaining popularity. Platform fighter fans have been enjoying the game in early tests, and the free-to-play element makes the game enticing to newcomers. Combine that with the element of having recognizable characters from DC Comics, Cartoon Network, HBO, and more, and MultiVersus is well on its way to being a proper competitor with Super Smash Bros.

When the MultiVersus open beta releases for all players on July 26, they will have a cast of nine characters to play without any additional grinding or spending. All of these characters have diverse playstyles and cosmetics to earn, including emotes and alternate costumes. Most players should be able to find a main while earning in-game gold for new characters, like the leaked Rick Sanchez from Rick & Morty.

MultiVersus Free Characters Include Harley Quinn & Shaggy

In MultiVersus' early access portion of the open beta, running until July 26, players currently have five characters to choose from. These characters let players choose from nearly all of the game's different classes, and are from many different franchises from DC Comics to Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera cartoons. In this cast, players could be able to find a favorite or two.

First up is Shaggy of Scooby-Doo fame, who falls in the Bruiser class. Shaggy has some moves that will be pretty reminiscent of Captain Falcon from F-ZERO's incarnation in the Super Smash Bros. series. MultiVersus leans fully into Shaggy's Ultra Instinct memes, turning the Hanna-Barbera character into a formidable, Dragon Ball-esque fighter.

Another free playable character is Harley Quinn, part of the MultiVersus' assassin class. These characters focus on rush attacks and quickness, using their speed to overwhelm opponents. Harley uses traps as well, so players combining these traps with her quick combos will likely see a lot of success as her.

One of the most recently added characters, Taz from Looney Tunes is also a part of MultiVersus' free lineup of characters. Taz is another Bruiser, who uses attacks like his signature tornado to deal heavy damage to his opponents. Because of this, though, he struggles in encounters with ranged enemies.

Adventure Time's Jake The Dog is playable as well. Another member of the bruiser class, Jake uses his uniquely stretchy limbs and skateboard to deal big damage to his opponents. Jake will also be voiced by his original voice actor, John DiMaggio, following the trend of many MultiVersus characters being voiced by iconic actors.

In addition to these four, DC Comics' Wonder Woman will also be free for all players. To add her to the playable cast, players simply need to complete the game's basic tutorial, an activity most likely already planned on doing. Wonder Woman is a part of the Tank class, meaning her abilities focus on shielding herself and her teammates from damage. Her shield gives her protection, while her sword and Lasso of Truth give her versatility on offense as well.

Free Characters Joining MultiVersus' Roster On July 26

Superman is MultiVersus' best Tank.

On July 26, MultiVersus' open beta truly becomes open, as the early access period ends and the game is available to download for all players. Along with this new release will come four additional free characters for players' roster, bringing even more variety for first-time players trying out the game. Each of these characters will cover a different class, giving players a chance to really explore their character options in the game before more fighters arrive in the Multiverse.

Superman is one of the first DC heroes on the MultiVersus roster and one of the new free characters, and is a part of the tank class, like Wonder Woman. Superman is a fairly heavy character and focuses on debuffs like using his frost breath to slow his enemies down, or heat vision to ignite them. Next is Finn the Human, joining his Adventure Time partner Jake in MultiVersus' free rotation. Finn is an assassin class character, using his swift speed and sword attacks to emerge victorious over the competition. Finn also has a unique gold and shop mechanic, which he can use to purchase buffs like speed and armor for himself and his teammate.

Another Cartoon Network character, Garnet from Steven Universe will be in the free lineup on July 26. Garnet is a bruiser character, using her powerful gauntlets to deal heavy damage to her enemies. In addition to her gauntlets, Garnet can use the power of song to create strong buffs for her allies in speed and attack power, an ability that could be expanded on if more of Steven Universe's Crystal Gems come to MultiVersus.

Last but not least, the original character Reindog will join the free fighters in MultiVersus. An original creation from development studio Player First Games, Reindog is a support character who focuses on 2v2 team battles. He has abilities like Love Leash, a special attack that can help pull his teammate out of harm's way when they're in trouble.

In addition to these characters being given for free, all other characters can be earned and purchased using gold, a currency earnable by playing the game. It only takes a few hours of playtime to earn each character, so frequent players should have no problem earning gold for new characters. Players looking to expedite the character unlock process can use the game's premium currency, Gleamium, or purchase the game's Founder Pack. Below are the other characters in MultiVersus purchasable using gold:

Overall, MultiVersus has a strong start with its roster. Players may not get to play as their favorite character right away, but there should be plenty of fun fighters to keep them busy while earning that fighter. Players can get their hands on MultiVersus now using early access, or wait for its general release on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam on July 26.
