Disney officially announced that the releases of their live-action Mulan reimaging and Scott Cooper's Antlers have been postponed due to the coronavirus. In what is becoming a growing concern for Hollywood, COVID-19 aka coronavirus has continued to change the movie landscape. Among all the effects the disease has had on the industry, the delaying of movie release dates has become one of the most common.

MGM was the first studio to announce they were changing a film's release date due to coronavirus, as No Time To Die was moved back seven months just weeks before it debuted. In the days that have followed, Sony moved Peter Rabbit 2 back several months as well. But, the continued spread of the virus has rapidly begun changing even more releases, as A Quiet Place Part II has announced an indefinite delay and the  global launch of F9 was pushed back an entire year. Now, even Walt Disney Studios is feeling the effects of the outbreak.

Disney announced they've delayed a trio of summer movies as a result of coronavirus, with the live-action Mulan the most notable to move. Originally set to hit theaters in just two weeks, the film no longer has a release date. They've also postponed the releases of the horror film Antlers, previously set for an April 17 release, and added another delay to The New Mutants. Disney said in a statement to Screen Rant:

We truly believe in the moviegoing experience, and we are looking at new potential 2020 release dates to be announced at a later date.

Mulan and Movie Theater

Even though the delays of MulanAntlers, and The New Mutants did not come with new release dates, Disney has provided some clarity on what the future holds. The specific mention of the theatrical experience likely eliminates the chance of any one of these films getting released on Disney+ or Hulu. Instead, the studio will search for new 2020 release dates for the titles, but finding the space for them could be increasingly challenging as more films get delayed. Disney won't only have to compete with themselves, but other blockbusters that have been delayed, as well as the movies that were already planned to release over the back half of 2020.

Although Disney announced the postponement of these film's release dates, the notable exception is Marvel Studios' Black Widow. The Scarlett Johansson solo film is set to debut the first week of May and Disney reportedly did not want to delay the film's release just a few days ago. With the film not scheduled to be in theaters for just under two months, Disney is likely planning on reassessing the status of the movie industry and coronavirus in a few weeks to determine if Black Widow should be delayed - and possibly their other summer releases as well. But, after deciding to delay MulanAntlers, and The New Mutants, it will not be surprising if Black Widow follows suit.
