The first reactions to Disney's live-action Mulan remake are here, and they promise an immersive experience that pays homage to the original film. The upcoming movie is one of 2020's more anticipated releases. This is partly because it promises to diverge more from the original film than Disney's past live-action updates have before. Mulan already received a PG-13 rating, making it the first live-action remake from the Mouse House to do so. Additionally, some fans were surprised to hear that Mulan won't be a full-blown musical, but will rather incorporate some musical elements. The songs from the original film are a part of what makes it so beloved, leaving some to question the decision.

The Mulan remake will also be without two fan favorite characters: the dragon Mushu and Mulan's commanding officer/love interest Li Shang. Both help provide a support system for Mulan and are also important to the overall story. However, in the case of Li Shang, his character isn't completely gone, but rather split into two separate, new characters. One, Commander Tung, is described by producer Jason Reed as Mulan's "surrogate father and mentor." The other, Honghui, is Mulan's fellow soldier and eventual love interest.

Luckily, despite these changes from the original animated Mulan, it seems the live-action update makes for a satisfying remake. The first audience members have seen Mulan, and as of tonight, have begun sharing their reactions on social media. Check out a sampling of spoiler-free responses to the film below:

For the most part, these early reactions seem to indicate a film that stands on its own, while also maintaining the spirit of the original. The comments on battle sequences in particular point to the movie making the most of its PG-13 rating. Fans can also look forward to strong performances from leading lady Liu Yifei and director Niki Caro. Considering box office predictions for Mulan are solid, it makes sense that the film is so good, at least according to the lucky few who have already seen it.

Fans should be excited to hear that those who have seen the new Mulan have enjoyed it. In addition to the changes from the original, Mulan hasn't been without controversy. For one, the continuing coronavirus outbreak had some wondering if Disney would postpone the release of the movie, like MGM did with upcoming James Bond film No Time to Die. However, Disney decided to push through. And if these first reactions are any indication, fans should be able to enjoy another solid live-action update when Mulan releases later this month.
